Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 5, 2026
I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. Luke 6:47-48
When Shana Schutte, my friend and fellow writer, was battling cancer, this was one of her go-to prayers: “Fear, I command you to leave me alone, in Jesus’ name! God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind! I do not need to be afraid because my God is with me. He is holding me by my right hand. I will not fear the future. Get away from me, fear, in Jesus’ name!” Shana knew deeply and rested in her Lord’s love for her.
Her life was built on love, the foundation of which fear cannot shake with emotional earthquakes or a tornado of trials. Is your life built on fragile fear or lasting love?
A life of love is built on the foundation of faith in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. A surrendered life is like a home of love, where the most frequented rooms are acceptance, peace, and fruitfulness. People who often linger in these rooms experience growing intimacy that deepens their affection for their loving Lord Jesus, enjoy 100% acceptance from their gracious heavenly Father, and are fulfilled by a fruitful life produced by the fullness of the Holy Spirit in a humble, surrendered life. A house of love is the permanent residence of those who place their trust in Christ alone. Love is loyal.
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross taught that “There are only two primary emotions, love and fear. But it’s more accurate to say that there is only love or fear, for we cannot feel these two emotions together, at exactly the same time. They’re opposites. If we’re in fear, we are not in a place of love. When we’re in a place of love, we cannot be in a place of fear.” Love expunges fear.
A house of fear is built on the deceptive foundation of sin, Satan, and self. Some of its most visited rooms are isolation, disapproval, and failure. A person sucked into these hopeless spaces is tormented by loneliness. This is a victim mentality: “It’s someone else’s fault.” They fear disapproval from the few who tolerate their tortured soul. Fear is emotionally exhausted and incapable of caring for others. And fear of failure taunts you to the point that it becomes a self-fulfilling outcome of your insecure imagination. Love or fear, which house are you building?
As God’s children, we were created out of an abundance of love for the purpose of love. Decisions made from a place of love are grounded in acceptance, compassion, empathy, and kindness. Kübler-Ross notes that fear gives rise to “anger, hate, anxiety, and guilt.” We are at our best, our most holy, when we mirror the love from which we were created. Rest in your heavenly Father’s love, knowing you are His beloved child, whom He highly values and cares for.
“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love” (1 John 4:18, NLT).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, build my life on the rock of Your love. Expel every fear by Your perfect love. Anchor me in acceptance and peace, knowing I am Your beloved child. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
Name one fear ruling you today; surrender it aloud to Jesus. Choose one decision being driven by love, not by fear. Rest in your Father’s affection, build on His solid rock of love.
