“If Christ is your everything, you have everything you need.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – July 26, 2025
Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything. 2 Corinthians 6:10, NLT
My eldest child recently passed her road test, successfully earning a long-coveted prize: her driver’s license! Within 5 minutes of returning from the DMV, she had dropped me off, picked up her sister, and off they went, and as they drove away, I thought to myself, “My life is about to get very expensive!”
In truth, I find myself in a season in which it is easy to have a scarcity mindset. Between cars, braces, insurance, and the looming reality of college tuition, it is easy to resonate with St. Paul’s words, “we own nothing!” It often feels this way, doesn’t it? And the tricky thing is, we can feel this way even when it isn’t true. We have cars that run, a beautiful house to call our home, and we have never once gone hungry. Yet the fear of not having enough sometimes can be as real as the reality itself.
The cure to this ailment is found in the second half of Paul’s words: “We own nothing…and yet we have everything.” Only when we lose sight of the eternal and fill our hearts with the fleeting realities of this present life do we fail to find the comfort and wisdom in these words. Yet when we keep our hearts set on high with the Lord, we are reminded afresh of the hope that cannot be taken from us and will never fade. This is true in seasons of scarcity and great abundance, for it transcends all earthly circumstances.
If Christ is your everything, you have everything you need. Cling to this great promise today, and be reminded of his never-failing promise to fill you with his life and love. Yes, the cares of this world are real, but do not give eternal value to that which is fleeting, tiny, and temporary.
Prayer
Father, no matter what we are facing or what fears haunt our hearts, remind us today that we can lose everything in this world and still have everything that matters, for you are always with us, through Christ our Lord, loving us with a perfect love. Amen.
Application
Take time today to rest in the truth that, in Christ, you have everything you will ever want or need.
