United by Jesus Christ

Written by Boyd Bailey

When those who follow Jesus are unified by Jesus, they become a compelling testimony for Jesus.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 19, 2026

I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man…the seven lampstands are the seven churches. Revelation 1:12-13, 20

Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates the emancipation of those freed from slavery in the United States. Originating in Texas, this annual observance on June 19 reminds us to honor those who have been freed from bondage and to pray for justice for those still suffering. For Christians, the deeper truth behind this day is that our unity is most powerfully displayed through our love for the Lord and for one another, especially for those different from us. Freedom from all forms of slavery, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, frees us to love everyone. When those who follow Jesus are unified by Jesus, they become a compelling testimony for Jesus. Love seeks to unify what sin has divided. The apostle John knew this firsthand. Exiled by Rome to the island of Patmos for his faith, he became—like Daniel before him—a prophet. The Lord spoke through visions of the past, present, and future. It is both sobering and encouraging to see Jesus standing in glory and authority, calling His churches to be a unified light. John was commissioned to write these prophetic words on a scroll and send them to seven churches, knowing that when the cross of Jesus is lifted up, all humanity is drawn near. “When I am lifted up from the earth, then all of humanity will be drawn to Me” (John 12:32, VOICE).

The world is not moved by a church that looks like the world. What moves the world toward Jesus is a church that looks like another world, one that embraces the cross and the resurrection through a community willing to sacrifice and suffer for their Savior and for one another. Just as allies unite to defeat a common enemy, diverse followers of Jesus bear a far greater witness when they stand shoulder-to-shoulder against evil. As Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Faith unified by Jesus lifts Him up for all to see and to serve together. “In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith… There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26-28).

Pray about how you can grow as a unifier in Christ. Here are some ways to engage:

Examine your circle. Is your faith confined to people who look, vote, and live like you? Or are you intentionally building friendships across racial, generational, and cultural lines? Invite a brother or sister from a different background into your home for a meal—and listen more than you speak. Worship beyond your walls. Occasionally visit a congregation with a different cultural expression than your own. You will discover that the gospel sounds richer when sung in many voices. As Tim Keller observed, “The gospel humbles us before anyone and gives us hope before anyone.” Collaborate, don’t compete. Partner with other gospel-believing churches in your city on shared missions, feeding the hungry, supporting foster families, and sharing the gospel. Christians who are inclusive of other Christians carry influence with non-Christians.

Repent of pride. Ask the Holy Spirit to expose any hidden prejudice, exclusivity, or superiority in your heart. Confess it specifically and turn from it. Bonhoeffer reminds us, “We must learn to regard people less in light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.” Pray for the persecuted church. Around the world, brothers and sisters still suffer for the name of Jesus. Their courage compels our unity. Diverse races, generations, and cultures become one when they trust Jesus Christ as their resurrected Lord. God is calling His Body to repent of proud exclusivity, refuse to be shaped by the world, and engage the darkness unified by the brilliant light of Christ’s gospel.

Prayer

Lord, unite us in Christ’s love, transcending differences and divisions. May His grace bind us together, empowering us to love one another as He loves us. By His Spirit, make us one body, working harmoniously for Your kingdom’s sake. In Jesus’ name, amen.
