So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him…. Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand. Jeremiah 18:3-4, 6
I had an engaging lunch conversation with a young man. He feels a bit insecure living in the big city, having grown up in a rural area in a double-wide trailer. Now, his role at work is to relate to those whose education and economic status seem higher than his. We laughed because when I was his age, I felt the same insecurities and, in my mind, was embarrassed about attending a community college. My southern accent carried the baggage of being considered backward and uncultured. But we both found comfort in knowing that Jesus was from Nazareth, a nondescript village of no importance. Yet Jesus embraced His hometown and His people. He knew His heavenly Father determined His destiny, not His origins. So, be who God has made you to be!
We are God’s work of art. If we are followers of Jesus Christ, God owns us. He is the potter, and we are the clay. Our lives are destined to become masterpieces in the hands of our Master Jesus. It requires a lifetime of molding and shaping, but after experiencing God’s grace, our lives are more attractive than they were when God’s grace governed them. There are at least two prerequisites for a life masterpiece molded by God. One is a masterful artist, and the other is moist clay. Neither is without the other, and both are doomed to failure. A gifted artist can be motivated and available, but without a subject, he only works in his imagination. A person can long to be the object of an artist’s inspiration, but there must first be a relationship for him or her to benefit. Around 180 A.D., the Church Father Irenaeus of Lyons captured this artist’s imagery, “Offer your heart to God as to a painter, that He may paint His own image in you.”
God is the artist, and you are His subject. His role is to mold and create. Your role is to be available and teachable. This is how your Master works. He needs your life, your undivided attention, and your moldable heart and mind. Dry, brittle clay is useless in the potter’s hands. It cracks under pressure and gives in to discomfort. Moist, moldable clay is full of potential. In the beginning, the sticky mire is unpleasing and uninviting to the eye, but over time it begins to take shape. The molding process is not easy. Sometimes you feel discombobulated and shapeless. You know God is in control, but your circumstances leave you feeling upside down and spiraling. This is God’s wheel of wisdom. Uncertainty and dizziness are God’s opportunity to grip the dampened clay of your heart and form dependence on Him.
Feel His fingers of compassion, hope, and holiness. He not only comforts you but also conforms you to the image of His Son, Jesus. He has the big picture in mind as He looks down on the potter’s wheel. Your perspective is limited as you look up from the clay-soaked wheel, peering into the faithful face of the potter. “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). He is passionate about His work of art. Out of billions in the world, you are His unique masterpiece. You are His one and only. He broke the mold for you and everyone else. No one is quite like you. No one! Yes, He is still smoothing rough edges and spinning out impediments to His will. Your life remains moldable through humility and teachability. Uniquely you, His masterpiece in process.
“But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? ‘Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?”’ Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?” (Romans 9:20–21).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are the Potter; I am Your clay. Keep my heart moist and moldable. Shape me into the image of Your Son. Make my life Your unique masterpiece. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Name one trait you’ve resented in yourself; thank God for it as His design. Stay teachable today by receiving correction without defending. Embrace your story; God wastes no detail forming you.
