Unexpected Provision

Written by Boyd Bailey

Your heavenly Father uses all He has so you can have all you need.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – July 25, 2025

Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing. And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus, they plundered the Egyptians. Exodus 12:35-36

After four hundred years of building pyramids and cities with their bare hands, the Israelites walked away from Egypt carrying loads of gold and silver. It wasn’t theft—it was the ultimate severance package from the world’s worst employer. The Hebrew word translated as “plunder” carries a fascinating twist. It doesn’t imply violent robbery but rather the spoils of war, with the victor claiming what is rightfully theirs. These weren’t greedy slaves stuffing their pockets; they were workers finally collecting long-overdue wages. Every bracelet and ring represented years of unpaid labor, and every piece of fine clothing was a small recompense for generations of suffering. What strikes me most is how the Egyptians simply handed it over. Scripture says God gave the Israelites “favor”—a supernatural influence that turned hearts and opened hands. The same people who had oppressed them for centuries suddenly became generous, almost compelled to give. Today, when believers talk about “plundering the Egyptians,” they’re not advocating literal theft. They recognize those moments when worldly resources unexpectedly flow toward kingdom purposes—when secular funding builds churches, non-believers donate to Christian causes, or Hollywood money promotes biblical values. It’s the idea that sometimes God uses unlikely sources to provide exactly what His people need. Love is full of joyful surprises!

Don’t feel bad about unconventional provision. Throw off false guilt or pride that may keep you from the Lord’s creative way of blessing you. It’s all grace. Every dollar, every success, every breath you breathe is grace, grace, God’s grace. He provides in His way in His timing for His glory. Thank Him for His favor that rests on your life, undeserved, yes, but that is the heart of grace. When God gives us what we don’t deserve, He gets the credit, so we stay humble and grateful. While you wait, look curiously in those unexpected places to discover divine access.

Maybe it’s that job offer from a company you never thought would call back—the one that not only pays better but perfectly aligns with your values. Or perhaps it’s the neighbor who casually mentions they’re moving and offers to sell you their car at half its value, just when yours finally gave up. Sometimes God’s provision disguises itself as a delayed tax refund arriving right when rent is due, or a friend who insists on paying for dinner when your budget is stretched thin. These moments feel like divine winks—too perfectly timed to be coincidence, too specific to your need to be random. The Lord often works through ordinary people and circumstances, using secular systems and unlikely sources to demonstrate His faithfulness. When provision comes from unexpected places, it’s a gentle reminder that our Provider isn’t limited by conventional means or logical pathways. Your heavenly Father uses all He has so you can have all you need.

Perhaps the Holy Spirit is nudging you to become an unexpected provision for someone else. That urge to text an old friend might be divinely timed—they could be struggling silently. Your skills, connections, or resources might be exactly what someone needs, delivered through your willing hands. Sometimes, being God’s provision feels surprisingly ordinary: buying coffee for the person behind you, sharing a job lead, or simply listening when someone needs to be heard.

Prayer

Father, thank You for providing in ways I never expected. Open my eyes to see Your hand at work. Help me trust You even when provision comes through surprising paths. In Jesus’ name, amen.
