To Whom Shall We Go?

Written by Tripp Prince

Our ability to follow Jesus is tied to our trust in Jesus.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 23, 2026

From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”

But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” John 6:66-69, NKJV

I was recently in a deep conversation with a friend, discussing matters of faith. He was noting elements of the Christian faith that seem difficult to embrace and hard to live out. On the one hand, when we encounter the hard teachings of Christ, we may be tempted to dismiss or reimagine them. “What he really meant was…” Yet I found myself saying something in that conversation that, upon further reflection, I find to be deeply true and rooted in the witness of Scripture: Our ability to follow Jesus is tied to our trust in Jesus.

Think of how many times a parent has to say to their child: “I know you don’t understand, but you’re going to have to trust me.” This is true with their physical safety when they are young, and it is true when we assure them that their hearts will heal as they navigate the emotional weight of early adulthood. Simon Peter in John 6 displays the kind of trust a child has toward a parent, the trust an apprentice shows to their master. Of course, Peter does not always display such courage and trust, yet it is in the struggle of faith that I find Peter so deeply relatable. It is not easy to follow Jesus, for it demands nothing less than your entire life. Yet, when we have walked with him through the valleys of life and he has gently led us through, we are able to join our voices with his and say, “Lord, to whom shall we go?”

Has Jesus earned your trust in this way? Take time today to reflect on the ways he has proven himself to you, showing up when you need him most, guiding you into the way of life and peace and away from the path that leads to death. Give thanks for how he has healed your heart and sent people to you as companions and friends when you needed them most. Allow this reflective process to deepen and expand your trust and gratitude for him, so that when times of testing and trial come, instead of running away, you turn all the more fully toward him.

Prayer

Father, remind us afresh today that in Christ we have found life to the fullest, and there is nowhere else we need to go, for he is with us and will guide us through even the darkest valley and wildest storm. Amen.
