Though He Slay Me

Written by Jill Turner

If we love and trust God, our life is sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit. No death on earth will end us. No fear of death can stop us. We are indestructible.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 21, 2026

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6:19, NIV

In my early 20s, when I was still a very young Christian, I witnessed the deep faith of a Christian man about to die. I still remember his words.

He was an elder in our church, a great man of faith, with a wise wife and a respected family. He was a scholar and had been a missionary. And at his urging, I became one, too.

When he got cancer and couldn’t fight it, he seemed fearless. The Bible says Jesus’ substitutionary death freed us from slavery to the fear of death (Hebrews 2:14-15). This man had taken firm hold of this truth.

When he stood to speak to our church the last day I saw him, he said people had been asking him questions. What was the treatment if the present one didn’t work? Had he prepared his family? What was his plan?

He grabbed the podium, leaned down against it, and looked straight at all of us, and said: “God is my plan A. I have no plan B. Though he slay me, I … will … trust … in … Him!”

He was quoting Job, whose life, as he’d known it, was wiped out in a single day. His family, his wealth, his physical strength … gone. Can you imagine? Yet Job refused to forsake God.

Scripture shows us many more. Daniel’s friends were about to be thrown in a furnace if they didn’t worship foreign gods. They told the king who’d ordered them there, “The God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us. … But even if he doesn’t … we will not serve your gods [or worship them]” (Daniel 3:17-18).

The Apostle Paul was constantly evading murder plots by those who hated the gospel. Yet, by real trust in God, he persisted, saying “Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:20-21).

The book of Hebrews tells of believers mocked, tortured, chained, stoned to death, for Christ, some even refusing to be released because they chose to trust in the efficacy of Jesus’ resurrection and the resurrection He’d promised them. Revelation 7:9-17 paints a picture of their future.

This list doesn’t even begin to capture all of them, but there’s a common theme: “The Lord is on my side. I will not fear” (Psalm 118:6).

If we love and trust God, our life is sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). No death on earth will end us (John 11:25-26). No fear of death can stop us (Hebrews 2:14-15). We’re sealed with God’s promise (Ephesians 1:13). No one can take us away from His love (Romans 8:35-37). Our true life is hidden and protected in Christ (John 10:28), and in Him, we are indestructible.

Prayer

Father, please let me live with this kind of confidence, this strength of faith, with the kind of character this level of trust in you builds. Let my life reflect my Savior who chose death to become our High Priest so we could have this indestructible life. Amen.
