Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 24, 2026
But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain… Exodus 18:21
A man God uses is capable in his roles. He fears the Lord, is trustworthy, and is honest in all his dealings. As a husband, he is passionate about loving his wife unconditionally and sacrificially. He understands and speaks her love languages. He values and cherishes her through compassionate listening, clear communication, and sensitive service. He honors his wife no matter what. This is a man of God. As a father, you instruct, train, and model the Lord’s ways for your children. Instruct through Bible reading and meditation. Train your children as you walk with them through life. They watch you handle success with humility and failure with a teachable, persistent heart. They watch you attack life with passion and love God freely. As they see you tenderly and consistently loving their mom, they will grow in their love for your wife.
Not only is a man of God capable in his roles, but he also fears the Lord and is trustworthy and honest. You fear God through your love and devotion. You love by committing to obey and please Him. Your devotion is pure worship and dependence on Him. Your fear of God precludes other fears, except for healthy ones, of course, like safety. You are also a trustworthy man. You can be trusted, and there are no bad surprises. People feel confident around you because you have their best interests in mind. You want them to succeed almost as much as they do. You are vulnerable and open to challenge. You can be trusted to do the right thing the right way.
In AD 391, the church father, John Chrysostom, lays out a man’s spiritual responsibility in his home: “If a husband would raise up godly children, and a home worthy of Christ, let him himself first be found worthy: for the household takes the color of its head.“
This week, put this passage into practice. Ask your wife what would make her feel most loved and cherished right now, then do it without being asked twice. If you have children still at home, read a short passage of Scripture with them before bed, even five minutes, and let them watch you wrestle honestly with its meaning. If they’re grown, call and tell them one specific way you see God’s faithfulness in your life.
Lastly, practice honesty. You would rather remain poor than build wealth dishonestly. You admit your failures and mistakes, even if it risks losing respect, rather than blaming someone else. You are honest no matter what! Regularly examine your business dealings. Is there an invoice you’ve padded, a shortcut you’ve rationalized, or a truth you’ve softened to protect your reputation? Make it right, even if it costs you. Trustworthiness is built in small moments. Ask your wife or a friend, “Do you trust me completely? Is there any area where I’ve given you reason to doubt?” Then listen without defending yourself. A man of God first humbles himself before God.
“Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed” (Psalm 112:1-2).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, make me a man of God: capable, fearing You, trustworthy, honest. Grow me into a sacrificial husband, a faithful father, a person of integrity. Let my life prove trustworthy today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Ask your wife how you can love her best today, then do it unprompted. Make one dishonest thing right this week. Read Scripture with your children; even five minutes counts.
