This is the Day

Written by Mez Stead

Today is a day rich in God’s glory. Will you rejoice in it or let worry rob you of it?”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 24, 2026

This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

We all have our “glory days,” a period of our lives that glitters in our memories. My years at university were that sort of time. I moved abroad, made wonderful life-long friends, grew leaps and bounds in my awareness of the world as well as in my faith. It was a time of high romance and epic adventure, and I hold the memories of those days as precious keepsakes. You can imagine my surprise when I recently opened a journal that I kept in the height of that glorious epoch and read the angst and anxiety in my own voice. Though I was living out my dreams, I was constantly preoccupied with what would come next in my life, and whether all would truly be well. If I could write a letter to that former self, I would encourage her to leave off worrying about tomorrow and rejoice in the days at hand, for they were such fleeting gifts!

Unfortunately, I cannot reach back to my past self, but I can take the lesson and apply it to my life today. How often, in my day-to-day life, do my heart and mind wander, worrying about an unknown future, or longing for a change in my circumstances? But the Psalmist reminds us that this, now, today, is the day to rejoice and invest in fully. As of this moment, today is the only day we are guaranteed. How much might we find to rejoice in if we treated today as the special gift from God that it is, rich in opportunities to experience his abundant grace and fresh mercies. What glories of creation might we pay attention to if we greeted each new day as a wondrous gift from our Father to be opened and enjoyed to the fullest? How might we treasure the duties and relationships we otherwise take for granted?

The Psalmist offers us both a challenge and a chance to shift our perspective on our lives. Instead of longing for the glory days, consider today as your glory day. It is ripe with God’s glory shared with you. Will you rejoice and be glad in it?

Prayer

Merciful Father, thank you for today. Free me from the anxieties that keep my thoughts and heart captive so that I may fully live in your grace and rejoice in your goodness today. Amen.

Application

Make Psalm 118:24 your prayer and commitment when you wake each morning this week. Consider how receiving each day as a gift can transform the way you think, love, and live.
