“Singing is communion with God.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 18, 2026
“Oh come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” — Psalm 95:1, NKJV
When I was 10 years old, right after my dad moved out, a new family moved in across the street. The Masseys – people whose lives and location were in God’s hands – had just come off the mission field in Brazil and landed in my neighborhood to serve a church nearby.
Back then, we’d welcome new neighbors with treats. The Masseys turned this tradition on its head – showing up on our doorstep with a tray of cookies. Recognizing my mom was newly single with kids to raise, Laura Massey cooked meals and left them with me right before my mom came home from work.
When I was failing P.E. in middle school, Preston Massey took me to the track with his kids and taught me to run. He sang the theme song to Chariots of Fire and cheered for us while we raced. A year later, I made the varsity cross country team.
Something happened once a month at their home I’ll never forget. In the early evening, our street lined with cars, and people carrying Pyrex dishes and Tupperware would pour into their house. I’d sit on my bike outside, watching.
I could hear the joyfulness. And as the sun went down, the house seemed to glow, and then it began to sing. I could hear piano and three- or four-part harmonies. I’d never heard anything like it, something that both thrilled me and gave me peace. I had no idea what was happening in that house, or in me, but I wanted to stay there.
One day, Laura told me, “You know you don’t have to sit outside; come in next time.” So, the next time, I did. Most of the furniture had been moved to the garage, except the dining table, which was covered with delicious dishes I was invited to eat. Some people sat on chairs, others on the ground. One woman played the piano, and we sang for hours.
I didn’t understand it then, but I now realize I was learning to worship. Before I even understood who Jesus was, I was singing songs to him, and the Holy Spirit was preparing my soul.
The invitation to join them was the opening of the door of salvation to me. And though I walked away for a while, one day I walked all the way through it, into that singing house and the Masseys’ singing church, and a life energized by praising God through song ever since.
***
Because of its role in my coming to faith, I feel pretty strongly about singing, but I don’t think it’s just me. The Bible commands singing, many times. Jesus sang at least at every holiday, and God sings. Did you know (Zephaniah 3:17)?
Many verses tie a song to God communicating his love or providing protection. (See Psalm 32:7, 42:8, and 59:16)
Singing songs to God is more than singing something you heard on the radio. It can teach theology and increase our faith. It’s communion with God. It binds us to other believers, and it’s possible that, unbeknownst to us, one day, someone will begin to praise God because we opened our mouths in obedience … to sing.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, open our mouths wide, and fill them with your praises. Use your songs to teach us, to show us your love, to protect us, to bring us closer to you and to one another. And God, please use the songs you give us to bring others into your kingdom. Amen.
Application
Singing isn’t just for fun. It’s a spiritual practice and a command from God, and He uses it. No matter what you sound like, tell God you’re willing to try it, and carve out time every day of this week to sing to Him.
