The Role of the Holy Spirit

Written by Boyd Bailey

Just as a loving parent instructs a child flirting with foolishness, the Holy Spirit pricks your conscience to flee from sin and faithfully follow the Lord.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November December 1, 2021

These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except for their own spirit within them? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10-11

As a new Christian, I remember running toward the compassionate embrace of my heavenly Father, and resting in His love and grace. My heart exploded with praise and thanksgiving for a father in heaven who could be present for me in the absence of my earthly father. And, as I invited Jesus to be my Savior and Lord—He captured my soul with His loving forgiveness. He became a friend who was closer than a brother, always with me to encourage and model for me how to love others. But in the process of growing in my faith, I missed the intimate experience of growing to know the Holy Spirit. Gratefully, His patient love began to show me His role in my life to comfort my heart, teach me truth, guide my life and glorify God. Maybe like me, a fresh reminder of the Spirit’s availability will draw you closer to His unfailing love and wisdom:

The Holy Spirit Comforts You   And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. John 14:16, KJV

The Holy Spirit comforts hurting hearts. His comfort heals your soul, and He alone is able to enter into the depths of despair and replace loneliness with His presence and perfect love. The Spirit’s tender compassion comforts the wounds your heart suffers with the gentleness that a mother comforts her hurting child. He freely offers mercy and love to soothe your aching soul. The Spirit calls you and offers the blessing of comfort for your heart.

The Holy Spirit Teaches You   But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26, ESV

The Holy Spirit lights your way and leads you in the path of righteousness. Just as a loving parent instructs a child flirting with foolishness, the Spirit pricks your conscience to flee from sin and faithfully follow the Lord. He waves a warning flag over unwise decisions with tough and tender love. The Spirit’s conviction stings in the moment but prevents future pain. He teaches you to walk in righteousness and to live an abundant life. The Spirit teaches you because He loves you, and as you learn from Him, you will grow in perfect love.

The Holy Spirit Guides You   When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:13, ESV

The Holy Spirit is your spiritual guide, leading you into truth and helping you discern the countless decisions you face. Your spirit seeks discernment to grow in grace into the likeness of Christ. The Spirit will tutor you in wisdom as you surrender to His guidance, and He will guide you and give you understanding into eternal truths. Like a spiritual Sherpa the Holy Spirit leads you up the mountain of difficulties, through the valley of despair, and down the rivers of delight.

The Holy Spirit Glorifies God   He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:14, ESV

The Holy Spirit is humble and does not draw attention to Himself. Everything the Spirit does is for the glory of God. He leads you into worship and unfiltered praise and glory—a glory reserved only for God, the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings! When you invite the Holy Spirit to fill you with His fruit you allow the Lord Jesus Christ to be the hero of your life. As you marvel at the magnificent work of the Holy Spirit—your love points others to God Almighty!

This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, fill me with your Spirit to bring you honor and glory in my life, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.
