The Power of the Cross

Written by Boyd Bailey

“There is no middle ground with the cross. It is either man’s foolishness or God’s wisdom.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 16, 2026

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

There is no middle ground with the cross. It is either man’s foolishness or God’s wisdom. It is either man’s weakness or God’s power. The cross frustrates the intellectual by challenging his categories of logic. God’s system turns the tables. What man calls foolish, God calls wise. What man calls weak, God calls strong. Jesus’ death on the cross for your sins and mine is God’s wisdom and strength. The cross invites humility, repentance, and belief. God gets the glory when the cross is the focus. Have you fully embraced the cross of Christ? He gives wisdom, strength, and security!

“These things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled…” (John 19:36).

The intimate details of the cross were foretold hundreds of years before the event. None of Christ’s bones would be broken (Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20), and He would be pierced (Zechariah 12:10). The cross never caught God by surprise. Your heavenly Father has always known that His only Son Jesus would suffer and die for undeserving sinners like you and me. Just as He allowed His Son to suffer, He allows you to suffer. Your suffering may be watching someone you love deeply be hurt. Hold them with an open hand and ask God to do an incredible work in and through your lives!

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46).

Even to the very end, Jesus trusted His heavenly Father. Even as He struggled and questioned, He still trusted. With a sigh of relief and confidence, He gave His last breath to God. It is finished. You or someone very close to you may be walking through the valley of the shadow of death. You have prayed until there are no more words, and cried until there are no more tears. Your heavenly Father can be trusted with the past, the present, and the future. Relax and give Him your spirit. Andrew Murray offers comfort: “Abide in the wounds of Jesus; there is the place of union, and life, and growth.” Release your fears until your grip loosens and you receive the love and comfort that mingle at the cross.

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5, KJV).

Prayer

Lord Jesus, at Your cross I stop arguing and start trusting. Take what I cannot carry today. Into Your hands I commit my fear, my future, and my spirit. Amen.

Application

Copy one cross-centered verse onto a card. Keep it where you make decisions. Whenever fear or logic calls the cross foolish, answer it aloud: here is God’s wisdom and power.
