The Importance of Honoring Mothers

Written by Pat Elsberry

Whether alive or in heaven, mothers deserve to be remembered, appreciated, and honored for the love, sacrifices, and strength they have given us.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 11, 2025

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all. Proverbs 31:28-29

Mothers are the cornerstones of our lives, the ones who nurture, care for, and shape us into who we become. Whether she is physically with us or in heaven, the importance of honoring our mothers is timeless and profound. Mother’s Day offers a special opportunity to reflect on the impact of the women who gave us life and to show them the love and gratitude they deserve.

Mothers wear many hats. They are our first teachers, guiding us with wisdom, patience, and love. They sacrifice their comfort and time to ensure we are nurtured and supported, often putting their children’s needs before their own. Through their strength and devotion, they provide us with a sense of security, teaching us valuable life lessons that stay with us forever. A mother’s influence is immeasurable, shaping our personal lives and the world through the values and character they instill in their children.

If your mother is still with you, Mother’s Day is a time to express gratitude meaningfully. It’s not just a day to remember, but a day to actively show your appreciation. Small gestures like a heartfelt note, a thoughtful gift, or simply spending time together and appreciating her presence can create lasting memories and moments of connection.

Mother’s Day may bring a bittersweet mix of emotions for those whose mothers have passed on, but it also provides an opportunity to honor her memory. Sharing stories about her with family and friends can remind us of her lasting influence and love. When my mother was still alive, I remember her telling me the greatest gift I could give her was spending time together. As a single parent raising two children, my time off was minimal, yet we always talked on the phone daily and shared a meal at least once a week. I’m grateful to have so many wonderful memories to reflect on and thankful for the time we had together.

Ultimately, Mother’s Day is not just about celebrating the role itself but about honoring the unique bond we share with our mothers. Whether alive or in heaven, mothers deserve to be remembered, appreciated, and honored for the love, sacrifices, and strength they have given us. As we reflect on the significance of our mothers, let’s ensure they know how deeply they are loved and remembered.

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12).

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for the glorious gift of our mothers. May we rise up and call her blessed and honor her on this day, whether in person or in spirit.
