“God has made us for eternity, and through Christ, has made that life possible.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 24, 2025
I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:48-51, NIV
It is so easy to be singularly concerned with the cares of this world. Though our Lord tells us time and time again not to worry and not to be afraid, our hearts are easily given to anxiety, wondering if we will have enough food to eat, money to put our kids through school, and a nest egg for when we need it the most. These concerns are not irrelevant to our Lord, and he delights in providing for his children. As we see in our Lord’s words today, we must remember how God provided in the most miraculous of ways for his children in the wilderness, sending down manna from heaven to feed them.
Yet the point of our Lord’s words, and what we must consider in our own lives, is that every form of material provision runs its course. Though we have physical needs, they are not our greatest need, and when we treat them as such, we live a material life that denies the true purpose for which we were made. Yes, give thanks for the Lord’s provision in your life, yet remember that even those who ate manna eventually died. Manna filled the hunger in their bellies, yet it did not transform them into people who could live forever.
Jesus Christ gives his life for the life of the world, dying so that you and I might live. This is not mere sentiment or wishful thinking. It is the foundational truth upon which the entire world rests. And it is the truth that must animate our lives and inspire our loves. Jesus invites us today to remember where our true hope rests. It isn’t that this life is bad or unimportant. It’s just that it isn’t the end of the story, and to make it the ultimate lens through which we see the world is to embrace a vision of life that is simply too small. God has made us for eternity, and through Christ, has made that life possible. Let us keep our eyes set fully on this prize, daily turning our eyes and hearts heavenward, for it is there that true joy is found.
Prayer
Father, thank you that through Christ, we have been offered the bread of life. Keep our hearts set fully upon this hope, through the power of your Spirit at work in us. Amen.
