“Spread the aroma of Christ wherever you go.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 4, 2025
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. 2 Corinthians 2:14-16a, ESV
I recently picked up fresh flowers from the store, a simple gesture of love meant to brighten my wife’s day. Though flowers are a beautiful sight to behold, it is always the smell that strikes me the most. For days on end, our home is enveloped in the most delightfully fragrant aroma, transforming our experience of the space in the process. It is the very same room as before, yet the presence of the flowers lifts and elevates our experience of it.
In a similar way, we are invited to be the aroma of Christ in this world. It may be helpful to keep this floral image in mind as we meditate together on 2 Corinthians 2. When you enter a room, what impact does it have on the space and those around you? Does your presence bring joy and delight? Are you a means by which God in Christ is sharing his love with others? Or does your presence deflate the room? Do you bring a spirit of negativity, speaking when silence is called for, tearing down when encouragement is needed?
Of course, how we are received is also dependent upon the spiritual state of those we encounter, as Paul reminds us. If people are far from the Lord and actively resisting his work in their lives, a close encounter with someone who exudes the scent of the Spirit will be for them the smell of death! Yet for those who walk with Jesus and long to be like him, few things bring more joy than an encounter with a like-minded brother or sister who shares the same faith and through whom are both encouraged in their life with God.
Choose today to be a faithful aroma of Christ, spreading “the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.”
Prayer
Father, may our life with others be a pleasant aroma that reminds everyone of the sweetness of your presence and the gift of communion with you, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
