“Let the reminder of God’s love wake you up and stir you to action.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 21, 2025
Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. 2 Peter 1:13-14, NKJV
In 2 Peter 1, we encounter a profound truth about the Christian life and are given an insight into how you and I can faithfully live out our faith in the present day. Here, we learn once again of the integrated nature of our lives, where mind and body are meant to live in harmony, both leading us deeper into the love of God and the life he calls us to live. We renew our minds and fill our hearts with the truth of God in Christ so that we can be moved to action, stirred up in our affection for Jesus to live out our faith until our final breath.
Interestingly, several of our more contemporary English translations obscure this point. For example, see verse 13 in the NLT, which says, “And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live.” Similarly, in the NIV, Peter says, “I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body.” And while these are fine translations on the one hand, they unintentionally obscure the point of refreshing one’s memory! Thus, the NKJV gives us the lovely phrase, “to stir you up by reminding you,” or the even more urgent CSB, “to wake you up with a reminder.”
Peter wants his spiritual children to live with their sights set fully on the coming kingdom of God, daily turning their hearts and lives heavenward as they eagerly anticipate the day when their faith will become sight. Yet we are forgetful beings, aren’t we? We are easily distracted and contented with that which is all too small and insignificant. As C.S. Lewis famously said, “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
Embrace disciplines and habits in your life that keep the story of God at the forefront of your mind. But do not let it simply live in your head! Let the reminder of God’s love for you in Jesus wake you up and stir you to action, loving God and neighbor with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30).
Prayer
Father, keep our whole lives focused fully on the promises of life and redemption through your son, that we may be found faithful until the very end, we pray through Christ our Lord and in the power of the Spirit, amen.
Application
What does it look like for you to live an integrated life of faith in this season, renewing your mind daily and transforming your habits so that your whole life is oriented toward his coming kingdom?
