Southern Snow Days

Written by Tripp Prince

Anticipating God’s Kingdom begins with a longing for that which is unseen.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 12, 2022

My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. Psalm 84:2, ESV

I live in a state that rarely receives a proper snowfall. However, every two or three years the stars align and that elusive combination of rain and sub-freezing temperatures combine, producing a magical winter wonderland to be enjoyed by all. As I write these words, I find myself awaking to one of these very mornings.

The land surrounding my home is quiet, the sound deadened by the weight of the snow that clings to the barren winter branches and blankets the surrounding fields. However, as serene and quiet as this moment is, I also live in a home with three young children, and though they are sleeping now, soon they will awaken to the truth that their hopes and dreams of snow have in fact come true.

Southern snow days remind me of our longing for the coming Kingdom of God. Free of the burden of salting roads and plowing driveways, snow days in the South are anticipated with pure joy and delight. For days in advance, preparations are made and forecasts are closely watched. Evenings are spent dreaming about what fun will be had if it actually comes true. In my family, it is not an overstatement to say virtually every area of our lives for the past week has been shaped by the hope of snow arriving at our humble home.

Do you long for and anticipate the Kingdom of God with the wonder and deep longing of a child on a snowy day? Does your future hope give meaning and purpose to your present reality? Is your longing for God’s kingdom a communal longing, one in which you share your hopes and dreams with others who also love Christ and long to be with him, just as you do?

Anticipating God’s Kingdom begins with a longing for that which is unseen. It is the deeply held belief that life with Christ is the aim and goal of life, and nothing short of it will bring true or lasting happiness. And so we set our eyes and our hearts on this goal, and like young children who dream of a wintry wonderland, we anticipate and prepare for the coming day in which our longings will finally be fulfilled.

Prayer

Father, help us to keep our eyes set upon the goal of life with you in your kingdom, through Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Application

What do you long for most deeply? One helpful way to answer this question is to be attentive to the places your mind goes when it has time to wander.
