Seek Good

Written by Tripp Prince

Seeking goodness is a demanding labor that requires courage and perseverance.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 16, 2022

He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, but trouble will come to him who seeks evil. Proverbs 11:27, NKJV

One need not look far or long to discover evil in this world. Of course, it can be found daily in the news headlines, with a seemingly endless stream of evil and brokenness breaking upon our world like the endless crash of waves upon the shore. And yet, one need not look to distant lands for the existence of evil, as it can be found most immediately within every human heart. Each of us is tainted with the stain of sin, and will daily find ourselves in situations in which the evil within finds its way out into the world through our words and deeds.

Though you may not be able to change the evil we see at a global scale, there is always an opportunity before you to turn away from evil and pursue good in the daily details of your life. While there may be patterns of sin and brokenness that have persisted for years, it is essential that we as followers of Christ resist a fatalistic approach to evil.

Transformation is always possible for those who are filled with the Spirit of God.

You have a choice before you today: will you continue to set your eyes upon all that is broken and wrong in the world and in your heart, or will you resolve afresh to give yourself fully to the difficult but essential pursuit of goodness, beauty, and truth? Seeking goodness, by definition, is a demanding labor that requires courage and perseverance. It is infinitely easier to see all that is wrong in our world. Faith and trust in God is not required to see evil or its countless effects. These are ever present and always before us. Yet, by faith can you today take the narrow path and tune your ears to the sound of God’s kingdom and adjust your eyes to see the buds of new growth that are springing to life all around you?

As our Lord Jesus reminds us, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7, NKJV)

Prayer

Father, help me today to see and seek the goodness of your kingdom, trusting that you are at work, driving out darkness by your great light, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
