Saved to Serve

Written by Tripp Prince

We are healed by Christ in order to share his healing with the world.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 21, 2024

Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them. Mark 1:29-31, NKJV

Though there are many images of salvation found throughout the Scriptures, one of my favorites is that of healing. Just as the Lord Jesus spent his earthly ministry healing the bodies of those who were sick and suffering, by his death and resurrection, he brings healing to our souls that are weighed down by the sickness of sin and death. Sin is a disease that impacts every part of our being, body and soul, and it is this complete and total healing that our Lord longs to bring to each of us.

Yet, as we reflect today upon Christ’s healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, we must ask ourselves a key question. What are we saved for? Put another way, if our bodies and souls are restored to health, what is a healthy and flourishing human being meant to do with their lives? Here, Peter’s mother-in-law provides a perfect example of a faithful response to the healing touch of Christ.

“She served them” (Mark 1:31).

Christ does not heal us simply for our own personal satisfaction or delight. Though, of course, there is great joy that comes whenever someone encounters his healing touch, he makes us “able-bodied” for a purpose, inviting us to join him in this restorative work. We are healed by Christ in order to share his healing with the world. We must daily look to the example of Peter’s mother-in-law and ask ourselves this question. “As a response of gratitude for Christ’s mercy and love that he has poured out on me, who can I serve today in his name?”

Cultivating a life of service begins with attentiveness to those around you. It is far too easy to be surrounded by needs, both great and small, yet be blinded to them by our own self-interest and navel-gazing isolation. Look up and look out and begin to see the need that surrounds you, for as you do, you will undoubtedly discover countless invitations from Christ to serve as his hands and feet in a world that is desperate to encounter his healing, mercy, and love.

Prayer

Father, as we receive your healing touch, may we also be emboldened to serve others just as we have been served, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
