“If our faith demands little, it matters little.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 15, 2025
Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. Romans 16:3-4, ESV
I often wonder if my life of relative American comfort is more of a barrier to Christian maturity than an aid or blessing. Of course, I do not take safety, security, or three meals a day lightly, and know these are blessings that countless men, women, and children around the world long for and I pray they will know. Yet it is the absence of trial that makes it difficult to connect with so much of the New Testament and the heroes of our faith that have gone before.
If our faith demands little, it matters little.
Christ invites us to come and die, to follow him in the way of the cross, and though for many in the modern world this may not look like extreme physical suffering or trials, the invitation is no less real. St. Paul commends Prisca and Aquila for “risking their necks for his life.” I wonder if anyone could say the same thing about me? Could they say it about you?
Has your faith in Christ ever so fully transformed your life that you’ve willingly and intentionally opened yourself in a place of risk for the sake of others? Have you given sacrificially in a way that it truly costs you something, where the Spirit of God must show up or else you’re in trouble?
Just because it’s possible to avoid these situations in our modern age doesn’t mean it’s wise or faithful. In fact, I am increasingly convinced that we must actively and intentionally look for ways to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones and give ourselves away for others in the name of Jesus Christ, for this is the only life that is truly worth living.
Prayer
Father, lead us into the deep waters of faith, where we are daily dependent upon you, and give us the courage and strength to join in your mission in the world, even when it costs us greatly, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
What does it look like for you to risk your neck for Christ in this season of life and ministry?
