“The wisdom born through hardship can help steady another weary heart.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 11, 2026
“I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them.” Zechariah 13:9
There are seasons in life that leave us feeling undone.
A difficult diagnosis. The loss of someone we love. A relationship that suddenly changes. A prayer that seems to go unanswered. A future that no longer looks anything like the one we had imagined. Moments when the heat of hardship rises, and everything familiar begins to shift. What once felt steady now feels uncertain. What once felt whole now feels broken.
In those moments, we may wonder what could possibly come from something so painful. How could God ever use this? How could anything meaningful grow from something we never would have chosen?
But what if God is using even this to refine us?
Malachi 3:3 tells us that God sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. A silversmith does not place silver into the fire and then walk away. He sits with it and watches closely. The process is intense. It’s uncomfortable. It often lasts longer than we would like. The heat is not intended to destroy the silver but to remove the impurities that prevent its beauty from being fully revealed.
In much the same way, God does not abandon us in the fire. He stays close. He sees every tear, hears every question, and understands the pain we cannot always put into words. Although we may not understand what He is doing, we can trust that He has not lost sight of us.
Refining does not mean our suffering is insignificant or that we should rush past our pain. Loss hurts. Disappointment is real. Some experiences leave scars that become part of our story. Yet even there, God can begin forming something within us—a deeper compassion, a gentler heart, greater wisdom, and a faith that has learned to trust Him in the dark.
God doesn’t only bring us through the fire. He can use what we learned in the flames to help someone else find their way. The comfort we received can become comfort we offer. The wisdom born through hardship can help steady another weary heart. Our story can become a reminder that no one has to walk through suffering alone.
God wastes nothing. Not the tears. Not the waiting. Not even the parts of our story we wish had been written differently.
The fire may change us, but it does not have to consume us. When we place our brokenness in God’s hands, what remains may be a deeper faith, a stronger trust, and a beauty that could only come through Him.
“Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction” (Isaiah 48:10).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, when life feels overwhelming and uncertain, remind me that you are still at work. Help me to trust that what feels like breaking may actually be refining. Give me the strength to endure the process and the faith to believe that you are shaping something beautiful within me. Draw me closer to you in this season, and help me to reflect your love and grace through it all.
Application
Think about a current challenge or hardship you’re facing. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” try asking, “What might God be refining in me through this?” Invite Him into the process. Journal your thoughts, your struggles, and the ways you see Him working, even in small ways. Trust that He is present in every step.
