Reassurance in Hard Times

Written by Boyd Bailey

“Humility takes the initiative to clarify conversations and patiently explain the truth.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 26, 2026

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children. And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them. Genesis 50:20-21

My stomach was in my throat as I looked down at the earth 30 feet below: my mouth was parched, my body was sweating, and my heart pounded with fear. Maybe it was my midlife crisis playing out as a 40-something. Calmly, my “seasoned” 20-something rock-climbing friend Preston reassured me that everything was okay. It was not just a little intimidating that my daughter and wife had just scampered up the wall ahead of me! I resisted glancing at the ground and kept looking up, following my leader’s reassuring words. Joseph’s brothers also faced a fearful time.

Even 17 years after being reunited with Joseph, his brothers still feared his revenge. So much so that, after their father’s death, they made up a deathbed story saying their dad had requested that Joseph forgive his brothers. Fear kept them from believing Joseph’s forgiveness and his grasp of God’s bigger purpose of saving lives, including his own family’s. Sometimes the truth needs to be spoken repeatedly in a patient, kind, and reassuring tone. Faith remembers facts and tends to forget lies.

Is there someone who may fear your retaliation, unforgiveness, or disapproval? Perhaps you go to them and restate what you may already have said: how much you love them, how you forgive them, and how you desire your relationship to grow closer in Christ. Your reassuring words can become a key of grace, unlocking the prison cell of guilt where fearful souls remain stuck. Humility takes the initiative to clarify conversations and patiently explain the truth. God can bring good out of an evil situation.

“We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan” (Romans 8:28, The Voice).

He did it with Joseph, and He did it with Jesus. Joseph’s abandonment became provision for nations, and the cruel cross gave way to the life-giving resurrection. Evil may be attacking you now. You may feel alone and wonder why God seems distant. You are His child, and He is not distant. He is walking with you. As you trust Him, He will bring about good. Your forgiveness of others allows God to leverage evil for good. Your heavenly Father reassures you of His love (Ephesians 5:1-2) and promises, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). Listen to and embrace the truth, but remain deaf to lies.

“However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you” (Deuteronomy 23:5).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I trust Your reassuring words. Give me the words to reassure others, in Jesus’ name, amen.
