Pursue What is Best

Written by Tripp Prince

Without a clear vision of what is best, we will struggle to know what is good.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 30, 2025

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11, NIV

There are so many things that demand our time and attention. Health. Sports. Stocks. Politics. Friendships. Hobbies. Travel. Budgeting. On and on we could go! And while each of these has a place and a part of our lives, if there is not a single, overarching vision that unifies and directs them, we will live scattered and fragmented lives. As it is often said, do not let good be the enemy of the best.

In truth, without a clear vision of what is best, we will struggle to know what is good.

It is for this reason that St. Paul prays that the Philippian church would “be able to discern what is best.” Thankfully, this prayer is surrounded by several clues that help us understand how we, too, can live lives defined by clarity on our highest allegiances and greatest pursuits.

In reading this passage, we see that our ability to discern and pursue what is best is closely linked to the amount of love that is in our hearts and lives. Notice how Paul prays “that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight so that (emphasis added) you may be able to discern what is best.” If our lives are not filled with the love of Christ and grace that he freely shares, we will be unable to discern what is required of us in any given season or situation. Yet if his love flows through us, we gain spiritual sight and wisdom to pursue the highest good possible.

There is no greater pursuit in the world than to know God and be known by him. We are made, as Paul says, to be “filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.” He is the best, and when we set our sights fully on him, everything else falls into place.

Prayer

Father, fill us afresh with the love of Jesus, that we may have wisdom and clarity to walk through any situation in peace and as witnesses to the transforming power of your Spirit at work in our lives. Amen.

Application

Meditate on these words from Philippians 1 today, inviting the Lord to give you renewed clarity on what is best, and the strength to pursue it.
