People of Peace

Written by Tripp Prince

Become a lighthouse in the midst of the storm, pointing people to the true Light who gives light to all.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 11, 2021

Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. Titus 3:1-2, NKJV

Today, September 11th, is a day of mourning in the United States, as the country and world remembers the horrific attacks that took place on this day in 2001. In many ways, when the towers fell, our world was changed in an instant. For those who came of age in the early 2000s, they daily breathed in air that was heavy with the threat of war and violence, as well as the reality of fear, anger, and suspicion of the other.

In many ways, the spirit that arrived on that fateful morning remains with us today, yet into this malaise our Lord speaks a word of hope for all who have ears to hear. Just as Paul reminded Titus thousands of years ago, today we are exhorted to live at the ready, embodying a life of peace, gentleness, and humility to all people (Titus 3:2).

Whether you find yourself reflecting back on the events of 9/11, or overcome by the challenges of our present day, you are invited, in your very person, to be a beacon of hope, a lighthouse in the midst of the storm, pointing people to the true Light who gives light to all (John 1:9).

This is not to ignore the fact that we are surrounded by very real dangers and threats. We are born with poison in our blood and in the water, and this sickness spreads to every part of life. Titus must remind the early Christians of this way of peace for the very reason that they, like us, were prone to forget! We drink the poison when we give in to our greatest fears, when we believe the news headlines and begin to speak evil of one another. Yet into this sickness Paul speaks to Titus unequivocal words of healing: all humility to all men.

A life of humility, peace, and gentleness to all is nothing less than a Christlike life. It is a willingness to love in the face of hate, to bring calm where there is chaos, and life where there is death. As we are reminded on this fateful day, our world is desperate for people of peace. Let us live, by God’s grace, “ready for every good work” (Titus 3:1).

Prayer

Father, fill us with your life each day, that we may reveal to the world through our words and deeds the way of peace, gentleness, and humility, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application

Be attentive to the words that come out of your mouth today. Are they judgmental and condemning of others? Or, do they bring peace and gentleness into the world as you learn to walk the way of humility?
