“Courageously stand your ground in the Lord’s strength.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 4, 2026
The men of Israel retreated, but he stood his ground. 2 Samuel 23:9-10
Fear is a vicious enemy. It steals hope, slaps courage across the face, and prowls toward its next victim. It paralyzes decisions, poisons faith, and convinces you that retreat is wisdom when it’s really cowardice. David’s mighty men knew this battle well. They faced the dreaded Philistines, seasoned warriors who struck terror into Israelite hearts. When the enemy advanced, the men of Israel did what fear always whispers: they fled. They abandoned their posts, dropped their weapons, and ran for safety. Everyone scattered except one man. Eleazar stood his ground.
While chaos erupted around him and comrades abandoned the fight, Eleazar refused to move. He didn’t flee. He didn’t rationalize retreating. He planted his feet and engaged the enemy until his hand froze to his sword from exhaustion. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. Not because of superior numbers or better strategy, but because God had one man He could work with. One man full of courage and faith. That’s the power of standing when everyone else runs.
Courage is king. It gives you energy when exhaustion screams quit. It sharpens focus when distractions multiply. It ignites faith when circumstances look impossible. It propels you forward to follow God’s calling, even when the path seems terrifying. But where does courage come from? It doesn’t manufacture itself through positive thinking or self-help mantras. Real courage, the Eleazar kind that stands against overwhelming odds, flows from three deep wells:
First, confidence in God’s faithfulness. Eleazar didn’t stand because he was naturally brave or recklessly fearless. He stood because he knew the Lord’s track record. He had proven faithful repeatedly, and that history built confidence. When you’ve seen divine deliverance before, you trust He’ll deliver again. Second, comfort in who you are. Eleazar knew his identity: he was one of David’s mighty men, chosen and equipped for battle. When you’re secure in Christ’s identity, you don’t need others’ approval to validate your decisions. You don’t crumble when they flee because your confidence isn’t tied to their courage. Third, assurance that you’re following the Spirit. Eleazar wasn’t standing for personal glory or stubborn pride. He was defending his people and God’s purposes. When you’re calmly certain you’re walking in God’s will, fear loses its grip. You can stand in the face of overwhelming opposition because you know whose side you’re on.
Eleazar stood his ground, and the Lord brought victory. Not Eleazar’s strength, God’s strength working through one courageous man. That’s the pattern throughout Scripture. Your heavenly Father needs one person willing to stand when everyone else flees. Your battles are similar to those of others. It might be standing for truth when lies dominate your workplace. Standing for purity when compromise surrounds you. Standing for your marriage when divorce looks easier. Standing for integrity when corruption pays better. Standing for faith when skepticism feels safer. Fear will scream at you to run. It will show you all the logical reasons to retreat. It will point to everyone else fleeing and say, “See? Even they’re giving up.” Be that person who stands when others flee. Trust God’s faithfulness more than fear’s threats. Know who you are and whose you are. Follow His will confidently, even when you’re standing alone. Then watch God bring victory through your courage. He’s done it before. He’ll do it again. Stand in the Spirit’s strength.
“Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today” (Exodus 14:13).
