Not Forgotten

Written by Boyd Bailey

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 29, 2014

But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me. Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” Isaiah 49:14-15

The Lord does not forget His own. He does not forget them while they are separated from home serving on foreign soil. He does not forget them in their fierce battle with health issues. He does not forget them in their fight against sin and Satan. He does not forget them in their disturbing doubts. He does not forget them in their feelings of helplessness. He does not forget them in their new found fame. Like a compassionate mom cuddles her newborn, so our heavenly Father cares for us. We are born in the image of God. We are His creation, whom He never forgets.

Our mortal minds forget, but our omniscient God never forgets us. We can forget whose we are, but our loving Lord reminds us: we are His precious child. We may forget where we are, but our omnipresent Savior shows us: we are led by His discerning Spirit. We forget to forgive, but our ever forgiving heavenly Father gives us the grace to forgive. If we feel forgotten, by faith we can be found and comforted by the love of Christ. He does not forget those who call on His name.

“I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love.To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them” (Hosea 11:4).

We may forget to return a phone call, but Christ remembers to communicate with us by intimate prayer through a season of suffering, in the beauty of His creation, or in His love letter, the Bible. We can forget to pay a bill and incur a penalty, but Jesus is never late in His grace payment for our sin. Perhaps we don’t remember a promise we made, hurting our credibility, but the Almighty’s integrity is never in question. The memory of our Master Jesus is assurance that we are not forgotten. Those the Lord admits into His Kingdom–He never forgets.

Do you feel forgotten? Has your aloneness caused you to lose faith? If so, do not give up, let perseverance complete its work. “Spiritual maturity is measured in terms of persevering faith, not perfect behavior (Andy Stanley).” We are all a work in process, so we continue to trust Christ because we know He is writing the story of His grace and love in our heart. Yes persevere, especially when people forget their commitments. God is faithful. The Lord longs to bring those experiencing spiritual exile into the promised land of His presence. He may be silent for now, but do not forget His faithfulness. We aren’t forgotten by our loving heavenly Father. He remembers!

“I have made you, you are my servant; Israel, I will not forget you” (Isaiah 44:21).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for not forgetting me, even when I feel alone and forgotten.
