Not a Burden

Written by Boyd Bailey

The more you love the Lord, the more you joyfully obey the Lord.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 31, 2025

In fact, this is love for God: to keep His commands. And his commands are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

Obedience to God should naturally flow from your loving relationship with the Lord. True love for Him isn’t judged solely by feelings but by following His commandments, and here’s His grace: these commandments are not burdensome. This shows that obedience isn’t meant to be a heavy or oppressive duty but a natural and joyful way to express our love and devotion to our heavenly Father. Genuine love for Him obeys His commands. It becomes fulfilling rather than restrictive, enriching our faith journey as we seek to align with His will. A heart changed by love doesn’t obey reluctantly; it obeys eagerly, finding freedom in surrender and delight in doing what pleases the One who first loved us. Is your obedience joyful or done out of fearful duty?

Christ’s commands don’t crush; they carry us. But man’s demands? Those are chains disguised as duty. Yet there’s a different way. Joy blooms where obedience takes root. Peace flows where Jesus guides. His yoke rests lightly on willing shoulders, bringing not bondage but the breathtaking liberty of surrender. Here’s the paradox: true freedom comes through following. Real rest comes from running hard after what He wants. So, love: genuine, gritty, gospel-filled love obeys. Not begrudgingly. Gladly.

As we grow deeper in love with God, we also grow deeper in love with His law. These two are inseparable. How empty our claims of affection become if we ignore His Word, if His voice stays unfamiliar. Scripture isn’t just a dusty rulebook—it’s a love letter, a living guide revealing exactly what makes the Father’s heart rejoice. He has clearly told us: worship that honors, praise that delights, prayers that humble, forgiveness freely given, generosity poured out for the poor, hands that lift up widows and orphans, mouths that proclaim good news, lives that raise up the faithful.

“Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble” (Psalm 119:165).

Does your love show up as obedience? It matters because the world’s ways will whisper. Temptation will tug. You’ll be pulled toward paths that promise freedom but deliver only friction and falls. But grace—God’s grace—becomes gravel beneath your gospel-shod feet, giving you grip on ground that the enemy makes slick with lies. Trust provides traction. Faith finds footing. Do what Christ commands and watch His energy surge through your efforts. Obedience isn’t an obligation, it’s an opportunity. It pays eternal dividends.

So, what’s the Holy Spirit asking of you today? Maybe it’s forgiveness you’ve been holding back, the kind Christ poured out on you freely. Maybe a financial issue worries you, and it’s time to let go of the debt without losing respect for the debtor’s dignity. Pray constantly. Give without hesitation. Trust without the fear of doubt. Love without conditions. Forgive without keeping score. Your obedience reveals your love. So, by grace—nothing but grace—obey faithfully. Freedom grows in the garden of following Jesus. And here’s the ripple effect: your obedience encourages others to obey too. The more you love the Lord, the more you joyfully obey the Lord.

“If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15).

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your commands don’t crush but carry me toward freedom. What looks like restriction is really Your loving protection. Help me obey gladly, knowing Your ways bless abundantly. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Application
