Love Remembers

Written by Boyd Bailey

Your comfort is Christ’s conduit to create a safe environment for a person’s pain to be revealed and healed by the ointment of God’s unfailing love.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 21, 2022

This is what the Lord says: I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown. Jeremiah 2:2

We may forget, but the Lord remembers. We may forget the early days of our faith journey…the energy, the excitement of our newfound life in Christ—but our Savior remembers and celebrates with us the moment in our life that branded us with Love for the rest of our life. We may forget… our liberated spirit, our courageous heart to serve and share the gospel—but the Holy Spirit recalls and still recognizes the spiritual fire in us that may now only flicker like a pilot light. Maybe we need a wake-up call from the Father’s love to remember our past love and obedience and allow Him to restore the joy of our salvation. Love remembers the blessings of faithfulness. The love of God looks back on our life and celebrates our faithful love of Him in our younger years.

The Lord instructed the prophet Jeremiah to call His children Israel back to their first love—God. The prophet’s words paint the picture with a spirit of nostalgia…a bride awaits an intimate love between Creator and His most special creation. Like a couple passionately in love who genuinely vow—till death do us part—through the ups and downs of uncertain living…love remembers to remain faithful. But now, many years later, one spouse may take the other for granted…love has waned and been replaced with blame. Memories of their first love long to reignite a fiery intimacy.

“You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first” (Revelation 2:3-5).

Someone you care deeply about may be drifting away from the Lord or may have forsaken His love altogether. If so, consider how to comfort him with a memory of his intimate love with the Lord. Like Jeremiah, celebrate the beautifully rich relationship of a bride and groom. Laugh and cry together with a prayer for the Holy Spirit to reignite a fire of love and obedience. Your comfort is Christ’s conduit to create a safe environment for a person’s pain to be revealed and healed by the ointment of God’s unfailing love. Love remembers God’s faithfulness during unnerving days.

Perhaps you find yourself feeling spiritually distant from the perfect love of the Lord. You may have taken for granted His grace and have stopped running the race of faithfulness to Christ’s commands. If so, remember… remember how He loves you—for who you are not for what you do. Remember your intimate love relationship at the beginning of your belief in Jesus…the joy, the gratitude, the relief, the serene sense of peace that buffered you from a hurried, noisy life, so you were able to be quietly comforted by God’s compassionate love. Love remembers. Truly, your life is a brief time to deepen in love and share love…to celebrate love’s memories.

“He remembered us in our low estate His love endures forever” (Psalm 136:23).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, refresh my memories of your faithful love from the beginning of my faith journey until today, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.

Application

Who needs me to remind them of the rich memories of her sweet, intimate relationship with Jesus? What memory of God’s love is a reminder to grow my gratitude and love for Him.
