What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate. Mark 10:9
What does it mean to be joined together by God? It means the Lord blesses and unites a man and a woman whose lives and relationship center on Jesus Christ. No one on earth can separate what heaven has joined together. Jesus is not offering a suggestion. He is issuing a command. Humans do not have the authority to dissolve a divine covenant. In one sentence, Jesus declared that no human authority may undo what God has done. Sealed by the Holy Spirit.
Marriage demands fidelity and faith in God because it is not a relationship of convenience but one of conviction. We cannot give up on our spouse except in the case of adultery. Even in unfaithfulness, their repentance and our forgiveness can heal the breach. The Lord is in the marriage-making business. He joins a man and a woman together as a mirror of our relationship with Him, final and forever. If you have experienced divorce, Jesus is not shaming you but offering a healthy path forward. Lean into the Lord’s love as you love together.
When you come together as man and woman, joined by God in marriage, take divorce off the table. Here’s why: you begin to fight for the marriage instead of fighting against it. Conflict becomes a puzzle to solve with wise counsel and patience, not an exit to consider. Trust deepens. Home becomes bedrock, not eggshells. What God has joined does not merely endure. It transforms both of you. Love perseveres together and grows more like Jesus.
Resist a culture that treats divorce as trivial. Pray, forgive, invest, and rebuild rather than dissolve. God is the joiner. Protecting what He has joined each day is our commission. For anyone whose marriage has already broken, this verse is not a judgment but a reminder of the original divine design. God’s grace still reaches. His mercy still restores.
Timothy and Kathy Keller, in The Meaning of Marriage, write: “The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope. This is the only kind of relationship that will really transform us. Love without truth is sentimentality; it supports and affirms us but keeps us in denial about our flaws. Truth without love is harshness; it gives us information but in such a way that we cannot really hear it.” God joins you together so you can be loved together.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You joined us. What You have joined, let nothing on earth separate. Deepen our trust, strengthen our covenant, and make our marriage a living mirror of Christ and His church. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Today, take divorce off the table verbally with your spouse. Then do one small act of repair: a hidden kindness, an honest apology, an uninterrupted conversation. Build relational bedrock, not emotional eggshells.
