“Spiritual transformation does not happen overnight.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 25, 2025
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18, NIV
In his practical guide to the spiritual life, Father Evan Armatas offers a profound insight on the difference between God and humanity. He notes, “There is only one Person in creation who can state, ‘I AM,’ and that is God. The rest of us are in a state of becoming” (Toolkit for Spiritual Growth II, pg. 49). Ever since I first came across this quote, it has stayed close to my heart and mind. What a powerful insight that is overflowing with hope!
Think for a moment of the part of your life that is the source of your greatest shame, embarrassment, or frustration. This is a hard and potentially painful thing to do, I know. Yet as you do, cling to the promise that whoever you are in this moment is not the end of your story. You are not in your final state of being, thanks be to God! No, as St. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 3, we are “being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory (emphasis added).”
Spiritual transformation does not happen overnight. It is a journey of daily surrender, becoming by grace what Christ is by nature. God alone is I AM. You and I are becoming like him, if we have the humility and faith to take up our crosses and learn to follow as he leads, walking the road that leads to life.
Patient trust in the process of growth and transformation is necessary for us to avoid discouragement and despondency. The patterns of living that lead to unhealthy habits and struggles were not cultivated overnight. Similarly, our healing and transformation take time, walking with God in the present, for it is here and now that he can be encountered, and it is in the present that our past shames are transformed and our future is filled with purpose.
Prayer
Father, remind us that we are always in a state of becoming, and let that truth wash over us today in a renewed way, we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
How can the truth that you are always becoming set you free from shame and discouragement?
