Heavenly Preparations Now

Written by Boyd Bailey

Be prepared to receive God’s preparations.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 1, 2026

I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself. John 14:3

What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9

There is something deeply moving about receiving the gift of another’s preparation. A meal crafted with care, each course thoughtfully chosen, the flavors building on one another in ways that delight without effort on your part. A trip planned by someone who loves you, every detail considered, every contingency addressed, so all you have to do is show up and receive the experience. A milestone celebration quietly organized by someone who knows you well enough to include every touch that makes it personal and unforgettable. In each of these moments, you did not earn the preparation. You simply received it with gratitude. And your receiving, your genuine, unhurried, grateful presence in the gift, was itself the response the giver hoped for.

Jesus is preparing something. John 14:3 contains one of the most breathtaking promises in all of Scripture. He has gone ahead. He is actively working on your behalf right now and will return to bring you to Himself personally. This is not a metaphor or a poetic sentiment. It is a specific, intentional, loving declaration from the Son of God to every person who belongs to Him. Your eternal home is being prepared by the most capable and most loving One in existence. And 1 Corinthians 2:9 tells us that what He is preparing exceeds every category of human imagination. Not merely better than the best thing you have ever experienced. Beyond what the eye has seen. Beyond what the ear has heard. Beyond what the most creative and hopeful human heart has ever conceived. The preparation is an extraordinary example of personalized love.

But here is the reciprocal truth embedded in this promise. Just as Jesus prepares a place for us in heaven, we are called to prepare ourselves on earth. The recipient of another’s preparation is still responsible for showing up ready to receive it. The guest invited to the carefully prepared meal still needs to come to the table. The traveler whose itinerary has been flawlessly planned still needs to pack their bags and board the plane.

Preparing ourselves to meet God is a lifelong work. It is the daily practice of loving Him and being loved by Him, deepening the relationship now that will be consummated in eternity. It is choosing prayer over distraction, Scripture over noise, obedience over convenience, and people over productivity. It is living with eternity in view so that the things of earth remain in their proper proportion. Hebrews 12:1 calls us to run the race set before us with endurance, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. That forward orientation, living today in light of what is coming, is the posture of someone who takes preparation seriously from both directions. God is preparing heaven for you. Are you preparing yourself for heaven?

Begin each morning with a simple question: if Jesus returned today, would He find me doing and becoming an expression of His love? Let that question shape your choices before the day gains momentum. Invest in your relationship with God now with the same seriousness you would give any relationship you deeply value. You do not want to meet the Lord as a stranger whom you had always meant to get to know better. Live generously and love freely, not to earn a place that He has already prepared, but because a life oriented toward eternity naturally loosens its grip on the temporary and opens its hands toward what lasts. Be prepared to receive God’s preparations.

“Instead, they were longing for a better country — a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:16).

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the extraordinary promise that you have gone ahead to prepare a place for me. While I wait, prepare me, shape my heart, deepen my love, and help me live today in light of what is coming. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
