“To hear His voice, we must be intentional. We must choose stillness in a world that idolizes hustle.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 22, 2025
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
In a world full of noise – notifications, appointments, responsibilities, and distractions – it can be difficult to hear anything, let alone the voice of God. The truth is, God is always speaking. The real question is – are we being quiet enough to hear Him?
The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He doesn’t barge in. He doesn’t shout to compete with our busyness. He doesn’t demand our attention like the chaos of the world does. Instead, He speaks in gentle whispers. Subtle nudges. Soft reminders. He was given to us by Jesus, not as a taskmaster, but as a Comforter – one who comes alongside us to guide, teach, and speak peace into our weary hearts.
To hear His voice, we must be intentional. We must choose stillness in a world that idolizes hustle. We must quiet our hearts and minds long enough to listen. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” That stillness isn’t just physical; it’s spiritual. It’s about quieting the anxiety, the noise, the rush, and becoming aware of His presence.
The Holy Spirit often speaks through God’s Word. As we read Scripture, we may find that a particular verse seems to leap off the page, piercing our hearts in a personal way. I’ll never forget the day this happened to me several years ago after I fell and broke my ankle. The doctor said I would be back to normal in 6 weeks – just enough time to make a planned family vacation in Italy. Needless to say, 6 weeks came and went and I was no closer to being fully healed than I was the day it happened. Months down the road, I was diagnosed with a rare condition I had never heard of. The day I was given this diagnosis, I came home in disbelief. It was then that I decided to get serious about praying for total healing. I began searching the bible for scriptures about healing when I came across a scripture I had never seen before. It seemed to leap off the page – “For I will restore you to health and heal your wounds.” Jeremiah 30:17. This was not a coincidence—it was the Holy Spirit speaking. We have to be paying attention to recognize His voice. You can be assured I certainly sat up and paid attention!
There are other times we wonder why God seems silent. But could it be that we’re simply too busy, or too distracted to notice Him? He’s not the one yelling over the crowd—He’s the one waiting for us to step away from it.
He’s speaking. Let’s be still enough to hear.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26).
Prayer
Father God, please help me to step away from the hustle and bustle of this world to sit quietly in your presence so I can hear from you. And please give me ears to hear the sweet gentle voice of the Holy Spirit.
Application
Today, make space. Carve out quiet time. Open your Bible. Take a deep breath and ask the Holy Spirit to speak. You don’t have to strive—you just have to be still. His voice is gentle, but it carries peace, direction, and truth that our souls desperately need.
