“Wisdom is discovered when a humble heart listens and learns from loving friends.”

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18
My wife, Rita, and I see our grandchildren often… Yes, I know what a blessing that is… we are very thankful. Lately, though, it seems like some of them have shot up an inch overnight! It made me ponder, just as physical growth occurs in stages, so does spiritual growth also; it happens gradually. Wisdom cannot be hurried; it’s like simmering in the crockpot of life, where the juices of joy blend with the spices of suffering, shaping us more into the likeness of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Believers who try to rush into righteous living can stumble into rigid legalism or pride in feeling superior to others. Still, humility develops slowly over time.
In today’s scripture, Peter finishes his letter with a call for ongoing growth. False teachers have been spreading error, twisting the truth, and leading believers away from steadfast faith. In response, the fisherman turned disciple urges Christians not to stay stagnant but to grow in grace—living more fully in God’s unearned favor—and in knowledge—deepening their understanding of Christ’s character and work. This growth is energizing and transformative, helping us remain faithful until our Lord’s return, a reminder that Christian maturity is a lifelong journey of learning, trusting, and becoming more like Jesus. Peter knew firsthand how failures can help us grow. Growing in knowledge isn’t just about collecting more Bible trivia or theological facts. It’s about getting to know Jesus better—His character, His heart, His way of seeing the world. The more you understand who He truly is, the more you can become like Him.
Here’s why Peter emphasizes this: growth is your best defense against deception. When you’re actively learning and growing, you’re not spiritually lazy, vulnerable to trendy teachings that blow through. You’re moving forward, becoming stronger, and developing more discernment. It also provides patient wisdom—it keeps you grounded as you wait for Christ’s return. Instead of growing restless or discouraged by delays, you’re focused on becoming the person God designed you to be. The wonderful thing about this call to growth is that it never ends. You don’t graduate from needing more grace or understanding more about Jesus. Whether you’ve been following Christ for six months or sixty years, there’s always more to discover and more ways to grow.
Christian maturity isn’t about reaching a destination—it’s about the direction you’re heading. Are you more loving? Still trusting? Still becoming more like Jesus? That’s what truly matters. The journey continues until we see Him face to face. What are some practical ways to grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? Approach the Bible as both spiritual sandpaper, to smooth away your rough edges of self, sin, and pride, but also see Scripture as a personal love letter from your heavenly Father to fill your heart and soul with His grace and peace. Growth happens through daily repentance and healing love. Also, an authentic community with other Jesus followers is a heavenly incubator for growing in knowledge and grace. Hearing affirmations of who you are in Christ, along with receiving hard truths that soften your heart, is a recipe for spiritual growth. Wisdom is found when a humble heart listens and learns from loving friends. Surrender to the Spirit to walk daily in love, and continue learning and growing in grace.
“That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me grow each day in Your grace and knowledge. Deepen my understanding, enlarge my heart, and shape my life so that I reflect You more fully in love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
What is one growth area you have in your walk with Christ? How can you be more intentional in developing in this area?
