Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 29, 2026
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:4-9
For many a year, so much of the Christian conversation on parenting has circled around the famed “spare the rod” passage in Proverbs 13:24. But the Bible’s instructions for parents ascend far beyond the question of whether to spank or not. Even in Israel’s earliest days as a nation, when God first outlined the way in which life must be lived for human flourishing to be possible, he imparted a holistic view of parenting that forms the very foundations of family life in this passage known as “the Shema”. And oh, it is a glorious vision! This view of parenting encompasses every part of humanity and every moment of life. While our modern lives have been culturally compartmentalized – learning happens at school, spiritual education happens at church, discipline happens at home, etc. – God’s design is that our faith should form the foundation of everything we do, from eating meals to taking walks to decorating our homes, so that our children’s lives are infused with the truth and goodness of God.
The Shema view of parenting is not only about the atmosphere of our home lives; it is also deeply relational. The assumption is that the parent is walking alongside the child, guiding him or her along the way of righteousness. Suddenly, discipline is not about reactionary punishment that treats misdemeanours like a game of wack-a-mole, but rather it becomes a process of discipleship that grows through relationship. The parent taking a young child for a walk in the woods does not reprimand him each time his curious little foot strays from the path. Neither would that parent allow him to wander off into harm’s way. Rather, the parent lovingly guides the little one along, teaching him where to step, helping him avoid missteps, and gently leading him back to the path when distraction draws him away, all the while mutually enjoying the beauty and the togetherness of the walk so that the child learns to delight in the way.
The Shema vision of parenting is so much grander – and yes, more demanding – than a question of how to punish a child’s misbehavior. A parent’s knees might rightly begin to wobble at the bigness of this kind of parenting, for who among us walks God’s path so faithfully that we are equipped to lead these human souls entrusted to us? But this is the beauty of it: while we lead our children, we also have a Father who lovingly leads us and graciously guides us back to the way when we stray. It all begins and ends with love.
Prayer
Almighty Father, thank you that you haven’t merely given me a list of rules I must obey to earn status as your child, but you have invited me, through your Son, into a relationship with you. May I always seek you and have a heart like yours as I tend the flock you have put into my care. Amen.
Application
Has your vision of parenting reduced to legalistic punishment of wrongdoing? Take today’s passage literally and write the words of the Shema out somewhere you will see them every day. Pray that they may be inscribed on your heart so that you will be able to impart them to your child/ren as you walk the way together.
