“Reject the lie that you don’t matter and embrace your belovedness.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 27, 2025
She [Hagar] gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13
We all have a God-given desire to be seen, to be known, to be heard, and to be understood. This fundamental human longing transcends cultural and religious boundaries, expressed in our deepest relationships and creative expressions. When we feel truly seen and understood, we experience validation and a deep sense of connection. This desire drives us to share our stories, seek authentic community, and pursue meaningful dialogue. It reflects our inherent worth and the sacred nature of connection, reminding us that isolation contradicts our essential design for relationship and understanding. Scripture provides a compelling story of being seen by God.
El Roi (sometimes spelled “El Roy”) is one of the names used for God in the Bible, meaning “The God Who Sees” or “God Who Sees Me.” It comes from Genesis 16:13, when Hagar, the Egyptian servant of Sarai (later Sarah), fled into the desert after mistreatment. There, God’s angel appeared to her, gave her a promise about her son Ishmael, and comforted her. In response, Hagar said: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13 (NIV). In Hebrew, El means “God,” and Roi (רוֹאִי, ro’i) means “who sees” or “my seeing.” So, El Roi emphasizes God’s intimate awareness of individual lives and struggles — a powerful reminder that God notices the unseen and cares for those who feel invisible or forgotten. Hagar fled into the desert, alone and desperate. Misunderstood. Mistreated. She was a servant girl whose future felt shattered. Yet in her darkest hour, God found her. He spoke to her. He promised her hope. He wasn’t distant or unaware of her pain. He saw her tears. He knew her story. In the same manner, the Lord looks to know and love you.
In Henri Nouwen’s refreshing little book, Out of Solitude, he writes, “When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.” Yes! Love lingers long to listen and care.
Whatever you’re facing today—whether you feel overlooked, invisible, or weary—remember this: Jesus sees you. He recognizes your struggles and victories, your heartbreak and hopes. And He cares. Jesus perceives you through humble servants who share His heart. Through His faithful followers who mirror His compassion, you encounter tangible love—gentle words, acts of service, and patient listening. This divine and human care builds a safety net of belonging, where your true self isn’t just accepted but cherished fully. Reject the lie that you don’t matter and embrace your belovedness. Jesus’s unwavering gaze pierces your deepest struggles and hidden joys, offering comfort beyond human understanding. In moments of invisibility or exhaustion, His presence reminds you that you’re never truly alone. His look of love comforts your heart!
