Delight in the Lord

Written by Mez Stead

One thing following Jesus should never be is dull.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 3, 2026

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10

A friend of mine has a ready answer for her children when they complain of boredom: “Then you must not be looking hard enough,” she says, “because God’s world is anything but boring.” Perhaps the same reminder would serve many of us adult Christians who live as though walking with Jesus is all drudgery, repetition, guilt, or a renouncement of fun. I like to imagine what it must have been like for the disciples who had the privilege of coming alongside the Creator of the Universe as he walked, spoke, ate, and lived in every way as a human being on this earth. The Gospels make it abundantly clear that, while following Jesus was often uncomfortable and challenging, it was certainly never boring. Every day must have been filled with expectation and wonder at what Jesus would do next, what he would teach and reveal about the Father and his unfolding plans for his world. The disciples must have lived with bated breath for those years of ministry at Jesus’ side.

We too have the privilege of walking with that same Jesus, and yet, how many of us treat the Christian life like a list of duties to be checked off? That is not the life Christ calls us to. He came to give us life to the fullest, unquenchable joy, and a hope that causes our every day lives to sparkle with the light of his Kingdom. We have Christ, the Good Shepherd who leads us to green pastures and still waters, as our companion. Knowing he is our guide, we can celebrate life in a way that honours the Giver of every good and perfect gift, be it a warm embrace from a loved one, a beautiful sunset, a wholesome meal, or the birdsong that greets us when we wake like the soundtrack to his new mercies.

The voices of this world would rob us of our joy. But Christ came to restore it to us. In his light, we see light (Psalm 36:9), and a world that once seemed drab suddenly shines with the fingerprints of its Maker. There is always more to see, to learn, to marvel at. Choose to walk in his light today, and receive with open hands the abundant life he desires for you.

Prayer

Lord, the voices of this world so often rob me of my joy. Teach me to attune my heart to your voice that speaks comfort and joy, and may the joy of the Lord be my strength. Amen.

Application

Practicing gratitude teaches us to note God’s goodness in our lives. Jot down on a piece of paper at least one thing you are grateful for at the start or finish of each day and see how counting your blessings can help you become more aware of their abundance.
