God Guides a Humble Heart

Written by Boyd Bailey

“A humble heart is not childish, but childlike in its total trust in Christ.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 5, 2026

He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. Psalm 25:9

Pride sends a person the wrong way, while humility guides a person in the right direction. Pride blinds people, but humility sets a heart on course with Christ. Humility is a spiritual Sherpa who can be fully trusted and leads to life, but pride is a deceptive guide who leads to death. A humble person desires God’s way to be her way. Thankfully, as we listen to and learn from His Word and His Spirit, the Lord teaches us His way. We are wise not to trust ourselves but to fully trust God’s divine guidance. Because His ways are not our ways, we seek the Spirit’s discernment before determining the best course of action. The gospel is God’s baseline for His will. In light of how Christ loves, we love. His ways become our ways when we humbly follow Jesus.

Henri Nouwen, in The Selfless Way of Christ, captures the spirit of a humble heart: “The great paradox which Scripture reveals to us is that real and total freedom is only found through downward mobility. The Word of God came down to us and lived among us as a slave. The divine way is indeed the downward way.” Our Father reveals wisdom to His humble child. Jesus prayed this prayer: “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children” (Matthew 11:25).

Has your faith remained humble and childlike? Or have you become wise in your own eyes, needing no one else? An isolated faith is set up for failure, but a faith engaged in community with other Jesus followers is set up for success. Alone, we cannot atone for our sin, so alone we cannot keep ourselves from sin. We need Jesus and Jesus lovers to save us from our sins and from ourselves. A humble heart is not childish but childlike in its total trust in Christ.

Are you facing a daunting decision? If so, let the Lord teach you the way you should go. What does His Word say to your mind, and what does His Spirit say to your heart? Get quiet so the noise of nonsense is flushed from your faith. Humble yourself under God’s hand, and He will guide you in what is right and teach you His way. Like a compass in the wilderness, a humble heart He will direct toward the wise way.

“A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” (Proverbs 20:24).

Prayer

Father, guide my humble heart in Your right way. Silence my proud opinions. Teach me by Your Word and Spirit. Make me childlike, teachable, and led. Show me Your path today. Amen.

Application

Today, sit quietly for ten minutes before deciding anything hard. Ask, Lord, what is Your way? Confess one place pride has led you astray. Then take one humble step forward.
