“God’s logic operates beyond the limits of natural law and human understanding.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 22, 2025
He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. John 21:5-6, NLT
The world had been turned upside down. Jesus was dead, then alive, then gone again. Now what? Seven disciples drift back to where it all began—fishing. Peter likely shrugs, “Guess we’re fishermen again.” Under the familiar stars, the splash of nets into dark water offers a strange comfort. But the fish aren’t biting. All night—nothing. Frustration builds with each empty haul. Then, at dawn, a figure stands on the shore. “Catch anything, boys?” he calls. The stinging reply: “Nothing.” “Try the right side,” the stranger says. Any seasoned fisherman knows fish don’t care which side of the boat you choose. Yet something in his tone makes them try once more. The result? Chaos—nets straining, fish flopping, shouts and laughter filling the air.
John sees it first: “It’s the Lord!” This moment isn’t just about fish. It’s Jesus declaring, “I’m not done with you. There’s still work, still people to feed.” God’s wisdom often operates beyond human reason. Daybreak isn’t prime fishing time. The spot seemed barren. Experience said failure. Yet divine direction turned emptiness into abundance. Peter’s earlier words echo here: “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets” (Luke 5:5). That’s the heart of faith—acknowledging the apparent foolishness while obeying anyway. This isn’t limited to fishing. Wherever God invites us to trust His word over our circumstances, human logic bows to divine wisdom. What the world calls impossible, God transforms into overflowing provision.
Where might God be asking you to cast your net? Perhaps it’s applying for the job you fear, starting the business no one believes in, or returning to school mid-career. Maybe it’s reconciling with a family member, volunteering at a shelter, or finally writing that book. Sometimes it’s reimagining what you already have—turning a spare room into a refuge, using professional skills to serve the church, or turning past failures into wisdom for mentoring others. The net may not look like you expect, but when Jesus says, “Cast it,” extraordinary things happen in ordinary places. Where experience says “impossible,” God says “try again.” Where logic says “futile,” faith finds fruitfulness.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Prayer
Lord, I trust Your word over my understanding. Give me courage to cast my net in faith, expecting Your provision and purpose, even when the waters seem empty and uncertain. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Where is the Lord leading you to be faithful with a person or circumstance that has not been fruitful in the past?
