Gift of Sleep

Written by Boyd Bailey

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today- January 10, 2012

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.” Psalm 127:2

God gives the gift of sleep to His saints. It is a gift easily taken for granted, because it is an everyday occurrence. But just like our Creator bestows the air we breathe, it is important to acknowledge and thank the Lord as the Giver of all good things. Sleep can be illusive when it is in competition with an ill-timed illness, erratic circumstances, or a guilty conscience. Indeed, sleep is sweet to a soul that is in sync with its Savior’s love.

What contributes to a restful night, unencumbered by external forces or internal issues? Peace of mind that comes with resting in the security of Christ secures significant sleep. Trust in Him trumps any tension at work or conflict at home. A head falls quickly on a peaceful pillow and eyes shut quietly in a soul stilled by Jesus. Trust turns off a racing mind and reminds it that God works out worries throughout a silent dark night.

“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” Genesis 28:16

Contentment is another contributor to God’s gift of sleep. Contentment claims its significance in Christ and not stuff. Because it is satisfied with Jesus plus nothing, there is a serenity that secures a good night’s sleep. Contentment does not come to a person consumed by cash and it eludes the individual that is more interested in image control than Christ’s control. Real rest comes not in un-relaxed striving, but in restful gratitude.

Lastly, a clear conscience with Christ, one’s self and other people produces a productive night’s rest. Honesty creates a calming haven in the heart, while lies run around erratic, trying to remember what was last said. If you are a forgiven sinner—you sleep well—without wondering what the future holds for you. The Savior of your soul gives peace to your mind, rest to your body and security to your soul. So, receive Jesus’ gift of sweet sleep.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

How can I slow down and rest securely in my Savior’s arms with sweet and deep sleep?
