Generous Sowing of God’s Word

Written by Boyd Bailey

Generous sowing of God’s Word is a role we all can engage in with delight.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 1, 2025

A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it. Luke 8:5, NLT

I was filled with joy and a strong sense of calling as my wife, Rita, and I, along with two of our granddaughters, served on a recent mission trip in a Spanish-speaking country. I experienced great joy watching young leaders describe how the Lord met them in His word with wonder, comfort, direction, and the sense of being seen and known. I also felt a strong calling to share God’s Word in Spanish, with hearts that are tender to the Spirit’s leading and open to knowing their Savior, Jesus. Inspired by Jesus’ words describing a generous sower, I am meeting this week with my friend John, who has experience in spreading the Word of God globally, and he loves Wisdom Hunters. I am excited to see how the Spirit leads us as we pray and act on His sense of urgency. Generous sowing of God’s Word is a role we can all delight in.

Picture Jesus standing before a crowd, dust swirling around His sandals, gesturing toward nearby fields. “A farmer went out to plant,” He begins, but this isn’t your typical agricultural lesson. This sower is reckless—or is he? Watch him work: seed flying everywhere, landing on trampled pathways where foot traffic guarantees failure, scattering across rocky ledges where roots can’t possibly penetrate, tossing handfuls into thorny patches that will surely choke out any growth. Any farming consultant would fire this guy immediately. What’s he thinking?

But Jesus smiles because that’s precisely the point. This sower isn’t focused on efficiency—he’s showing abundance. God doesn’t ration grace like a miser counting coins. He tosses truth everywhere, trusting some will take hold. The hardest heart, the most distracted soul, the toughest conditions—all receive the same high-quality seed. The brilliance isn’t in the sowing method; it’s in the sower’s bold hope. He knows most tries will fail, but he keeps casting. Why? Because when that good soil finally receives the seed, the harvest erupts—a hundredfold return that makes every “wasted” handful worthwhile. Love keeps on sharing seeds of grace and truth.

Jesus looks at His audience: religious leaders with hardened hearts, seekers with shallow commitment, worried parents juggling endless demands, and a few genuinely hungry souls. He offers the same message for all. The same hope is extended. The same invitation is given. “Anyone with ears should listen,” He calls out, His voice blending challenge and tenderness. He’s not asking about their hearing—He’s asking about their hearts. While the farmer can’t control where the seed lands, each listener controls their soil. This parable reveals God’s incredible generosity. He doesn’t pre-screen recipients or evaluate hearts first. He simply gives, trusts, and waits. The question isn’t whether you deserve to hear—you already have. The real question is: what kind of ground are you? The challenge isn’t in the seed, but in the soil.

Would you join me in being a generous sower of Scripture? Share the Wisdom Hunters daily devotional with a friend. Pray for and financially support the Wisdom Hunters’ vision to spread God’s Word to the ends of the earth. By God’s grace, we can all be a sower of Scripture. Start with those closest to you: friends, family, and work associates. Read a Proverb around the dinner table, host a Bible study in your home, or have a discussion before work with those interested in learning more about a 3,000-year-old love letter written personally to them.

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire…” (Isaiah 55:11).

Prayer

Lord, make me a generous sower of Your Word—faithful to speak truth, bold in love, and trusting You for the harvest. Use my life to scatter seeds of hope and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
