Forgetting to Remember

Written by Martha Wilson

When you remember what you have forgotten, you will give thanks and believe for more.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 22, 2026

But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?  Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?  Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets you took up?  How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?” Matthew 16:8-11

Like most moms, I’ve packed many school lunches. Sadly, many of them were left sitting on the kitchen counter as the boys rushed out the door, chasing after the bus. I’ve also driven the boys to school only to find forgotten lunch boxes on the back seat. Sometimes I would make a U-turn and drop them off at the school office, and other times I hoped they would learn a lesson when their stomachs began to growl.

In today’s scripture, the disciples found themselves in a similar situation. They sat in the boat only to realize they had forgotten to bring bread. Jesus hoped they would have learned a lesson by now, but it seems they have serious amnesia about the lessons Jesus taught. Sound familiar?

The disciples had been with Jesus when he fed the 5000 and the 4000 with a few loaves and fish. Jesus allowed them to participate in the miracle by serving the unexpected feast to the crowd. Scripture tells us that all ate until they were satisfied, and there were baskets full of leftovers. Jesus always satisfies, and He is always more than enough.

Soon after feeding the multitudes, the disciples were in the boat on the Sea of Galilee, and they realized they had forgotten their lunches. As they discussed the forgotten bread, Jesus joined them and reasoned with them.

A bigger story was unfolding, but the disciples kept thinking about the little story. He reminds them to remember what they had forgotten. To remember who was in the boat with them.

In other words, “No bread. No worries. You have Me. Let’s focus on the bigger story. I am the Bread. I multiply Bread. When you have Me, you have everything.”

When you remember what you have forgotten, you will give thanks and believe for more.

He had told them: “I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35) Not only had they witnessed the “Bread of Life” multiplying the fish and bread, but they had also served it and gathered the abundant leftovers.

Anxiety, worry, fear, jealousy, envy, discontentment, unforgiveness, and much more in our lives stem from forgetting to remember the story that really matters. Quickly, we become focused on the most immediate crisis and forget how we saw God just a few days ago. As we remember and recall God’s goodness and faithfulness, our perspective changes, and faith arises.

Instead of focusing on the forgotten bread, focus on the miracle worker who multiplies bread.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for forgetting who you are and what you can do. You are the “Bread of Life,” and you are always enough. Give me faith to believe you. In Jesus name, Amen.

Application

Pause and remember what you have heard, witnessed, and participated in with God.
