“Our faith is not tied to our circumstances but to Him, the One who conquered sin and death.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 12, 2025
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
Life has a rhythm that moves us through different seasons–times of rest, times of joy and times of sorrow. Just as the Psalmist describes the valley, the green pastures, and the mountaintop, our lives mirror this journey. One day we may find ourselves in the valley, where shadows loom and hope feels far away. Another day may bring us to the stillness of green pastures, where God restores our souls in quiet faithfulness. And then there are the mountain-top moments, when His presence feels so near that our hearts overflow with praise. How many of us have wished we could remain in the mountain-top moments? Unfortunately, that’s not how life plays out, and if truth be told, I think we learn more when we are in the valley, than when we are basking on the mountain-top.
When we are in the valley, the path is steep and filled with uncertainty. These are the seasons of grief, struggle, and waiting. David reminds us, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). I have grown to love this one verse so much. Not because we are in the valley–but because of two phrases within this one verse. This verse tells us that we walk through the valley. We don’t remain stuck there forever. And, then David tells us, God is with us. What hopeful reassurance this brings to our hearts. The valley reminds us that our Shepherd never leaves us, even when the journey feels long.
Green pastures, on the other hand, bring calm. They are the steady, ordinary days when we can pause, breathe, and recognize His provision. “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul” (Psalm 23:2–3). These seasons teach us the beauty of contentment, reminding us that God’s grace sustains us not only in hardship or triumph, but also in the everyday.
And then, there are the mountain tops. Like Peter, James, and John, who witnessed Jesus transfigured in glory (Matthew 17:1-4), we experience moments of overwhelming joy, answered prayers, or spiritual breakthroughs. We long to linger there, yet mountain tops are not permanent. They do, however, strengthen us for the valleys to come.
What unites all of these seasons–valley, pasture, or mountain–is the presence of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our faith is not tied to our circumstances but to Him, the One who conquered sin and death. Our hope is not in how high we climb or how deep we descend, but in the unchanging truth that Christ is with us always.
Whether in sorrow, peace, or joy, our call is to remain rooted in Him, trusting that He is working all things together for good. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus, every season, whether shadowed, steady, or shining, becomes part of His greater story of redemption and grace in our lives.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for being with me in every season of life – the valley, the pasture, and the mountain. Help me to trust you when the road is hard, to rest in you when life is calm, and to rejoice in you when blessings abound. Keep my faith and hope anchored in you alone.
Application
In whatever season you may find yourself, may you trust in Jesus who holds your hand and walks with you through every one.
