“Whether you are feeling weary, fearful, or in need of provision, El Shaddai, our God Almighty, is more than enough.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 17, 2025
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai – ‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.” Genesis 17:1, NLT
Over the years, many of us have heard the powerful and haunting melody of El Shaddai, made famous by Amy Grant in 1982. The song went on to win “Song of the Year” in 1983 and was later honored as one of the “Songs of the Century” in 2001. For me, just hearing the name El Shaddai brings back vivid memories of driving through Jacksonville, Florida in my little blue Datsun, windows down, singing along as I headed toward the beach. It was a carefree moment in time. But looking back, I wonder—did I truly understand the depth and weight of that powerful name? Probably not.
El Shaddai is one of the most awe-inspiring names of God. Among believers, it’s often translated as “God Almighty,” emphasizing God’s ultimate power and authority. Some scholars suggest it also means “The Overpowerer,” reminding us that God can and will accomplish His purposes, despite any opposition. Others believe Shaddai is connected to the idea of sufficiency – our God who is more than enough, able to meet every need according to His divine purpose (Philippians 4:19).
In a world full of uncertainty, chaos, and human weakness, it is essential to know God as El Shaddai. He is not limited by our circumstances, our age, or our brokenness. He is not confined by the natural order of things. He is the God who parts seas, brings water from rocks, raises the dead, and heals the brokenhearted. He is mighty to save, strong to deliver, and powerful enough to carry the weight of all our burdens.
El Shaddai is not only mighty – He is also deeply personal. The root word “shad” means “breast,” symbolizing nourishment and care. So, while El Shaddai is all-powerful, He is also all-sufficient and tender. He is the One who gently holds us close, providing everything we need – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. His strength isn’t distant or harsh; it’s near, nurturing, and full of grace.
Today, take comfort in knowing that El Shaddai is with you. No situation is too far gone. No prayer too small. No wound too deep. Whether you are feeling weary, fearful, or in need of provision, El Shaddai, our God Almighty, is more than enough. Lean into His strength. Trust in His sufficiency. And let the name El Shaddai remind you – you are never alone, and nothing is impossible with Him.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty [El Shaddai]” (Psalm 91:1).
