Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 27, 2026
Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23
My gardener friend said she had to dig up an entire section of healthy plants because the soil was bad. She pointed out the yellow leaves, but it didn’t look so bad to me. The plants still seemed to hold so much promise of good fruit. Couldn’t she just spray the plants and carry on?
As a Master Gardener, she knew good soil was the treasure, and only good soil would produce good crops. Early the next morning, she arose to attack the problem with a vengeance. After the plants were removed, the soil was tested and found to contain a fungus that required treatment. She knew that if left alone, it would ruin the entire garden.
Proverbs 4:23 teaches us that the same principle applies in the garden of our hearts. We are instructed to watch over our hearts with all diligence, because everything flows out of our heart. On the surface, a life can look healthy, beautiful, and successful, but what’s going on deep in the soil will eventually affect everything. If left untended, the sin fungus will grow and choke out the life that produces good fruit. It takes a watchful eye and great diligence to keep a healthy heart.
We may believe we are producing good things, but the truth is, it is often rooted in pride, people-pleasing, performance, and religious activity. We can produce good things, but with the wrong motive. We need the Master Gardener to reveal the truth about our soil. He knows about the fungus spreading beneath the surface, seeking to destroy our faith, spiritual growth, and effectiveness for the Kingdom of God. It is His great love that reveals sin in the soil and convicts us of it.
He knows when a person is taking His place, becoming a little treasured idol, or turning toxic and poisoning our lives. He knows when we are gaining security from good things or from fulfilling positions. He sees the attitude that is tainting the soil. He detects the seed of bitterness turning into anger. And yes, He sees the unforgiveness that is hardening our soil a little more each day.
Oh, how we need to pray daily:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).
When God answers this prayer, repentance and forgiveness erase sin from our hearts. The healing blood of Jesus covers our hearts when we turn to Him in true repentance, and forgiveness is freely given.
Thank you, God, for overseeing the garden of my heart.
Prayer
Spirit of God, come and look over my garden. Show me the truth of what lies deep in the soil of my heart. Grant me the surrender to quickly agree with you. Cleanse my heart, dear Lord. Soften my heart as I forgive. Apply your blood and kill any fungus of sin that hinders growth. Lord, it is worth it all to have a heart pleasing to You.
Application
Will you dare to invite God to search your heart today? Will you quickly agree with what He shows you? Will you repent and allow Him to dig up and remove the sin from your heart? It will be very productive.
