Dating With Faith Alignment

Written by Boyd Bailey

Emotions can accelerate poor decisions when not tempered by wisdom and accountability.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 26, 2026

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14

Here’s the foundational question every dating relationship must answer: Does this path honor the Lord and my future? Ask objectively and brutally honestly—do faith, family values, and life direction align? Dating that asks hard questions early exposes deal-breakers and builds a foundation for success as God defines it. Wise dating waits for God’s best, refusing to be hijacked by surface feelings and physical attraction. If you’re “in love” with someone who doesn’t follow Jesus, the likelihood of long-term relational success plummets. It’s hard enough to navigate personality differences, diverse family backgrounds, and character development without adding a fundamental disagreement about faith in God and obedience to His commands. You’re building your future on a fractured foundation: two pretty people constructing a beautiful house on cracked cement.

Start with a shared belief in Jesus Christ and mutual love for Him as your foundation. That’s a solid base to build on. Committed Christian relationships aren’t perfect, but they persevere through storms because they’re anchored to the Cornerstone: “Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else” (Acts 4:11-12). Be careful. Don’t let the feeling of “being in love” override the reality of whether this person genuinely follows and loves the Lord. Emotions can accelerate poor decisions when not tempered by wisdom and accountability. This is why wise young people seek their parents’ counsel. Wise dating shows you’re living in accountability to the Lord and to those who love you most.

Choosing to date someone isn’t like shopping for a sale. It’s a prayerful, prudent process. It’s far easier to stop an unwise relationship early than to untangle a complex web of emotions and physical compromise later. Be proactive. Date in groups. Avoid isolated, compromising situations. Wisdom doesn’t flirt with disaster. Finally, wise dating honors the Lord by honoring your body with purity. True love doesn’t prove itself through sexual intimacy because “love is patient” (1 Corinthians 13:4). Wait. Save yourself for your wedding day. It honors your future marriage and the Lord who designed intimacy for a covenant, not a casual connection.

Focus your energy and emotions on spiritual growth rather than physical exploration. You’ll have zero regrets. Wise dating, prayed over, recognizes a greater purpose in Christ: “With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ” (Ephesians 1:8-9). So ask yourself honestly: Does my dating relationship honor the Lord? Am I accountable to Him and my parents? Is this person equally yoked with me in faith, or am I compromising God’s best for immediate feelings? Your future marriage depends on today’s dating wisdom. Choose carefully. Wait patiently. Honor consistently. God’s best is worth it.

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman [or man] who fears the Lord will be greatly praised” (Proverbs 31:30).

Lord, grant me discernment. Help me guard my heart and prioritize character. Lead me toward a partner who loves You, ensuring our relationship honors Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
