Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 25, 2026
Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. Philippians 4:17
Generosity is not what the Lord wants from you; rather, it is what He wants for you! Paul unpacks the reciprocal nature of generosity from a Roman prison. He has practical needs, but he refuses to sound needy. His contentment is in Jesus Christ. Unperturbed, he uses banking language to describe an eternal ledger of love credited to his fellow Jesus followers. He cares more about the Philippians’ spiritual portfolio than his own needs. Their generosity has enriched them, not him. The true transaction happened in heaven’s invisible ledger. Then he assures them: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). What is being credited to your account?
Counterintuitive? Profoundly! Countercultural? Strikingly! Generosity instigates intimacy and celebrates freedom for giver and receiver. John Calvin, on Matthew 6:24, puts it plainly: “Where riches hold the dominion of the heart, God has lost His authority.” Where the riches of Christ rule, money is a slave to love.
“What’s in your wallet?” is a popular TV commercial inviting viewers to embrace the celebrity-endorsed credit card. So, what’s being credited to your eternal portfolio, endorsed by Jesus? If we hold our stuff in our hands, our lives are lost in the temporal; if we place all we have, starting with ourselves, in the Lord’s hands, we gain all that is eternal. Spreading the good news of Jesus, building His church, resourcing His servants, feeding the poor, and caring for widows and orphans are Kingdom investments that bring joy.
Let’s shift from generosity that seeks earthly recognition to giving as worship, credited to our eternal account for God’s glory. Jim Elliot, the beloved martyred missionary, wrote this timeless reminder in a diary entry dated October 28, 1949: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” Your salary, possessions, and reputation are temporary. The soul of one neighbor, one grandchild, or one stranger you supported anonymously is eternal. Every check written for God’s kingdom is deposited into a bank no thief can rob. Your quiet, hidden generosity is not overlooked; it is invested. Worship with your wallet. Invest in an eternal portfolio of the true riches.
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You keep the eternal ledger. Free my hands to give what I cannot keep, so I may gain what I cannot lose. Credit my account with treasure that lasts forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
Today, give something away no one will ever see: a gift, a meal, a check, an hour. Trust heaven’s ledger. Test God’s promise. Refuse to trade eternal deposits for earthly comfort.
