Come to Me

Written by Tripp Prince

Sit at the Lord’s feet and discover the secret of an abiding life with Christ.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 5, 2021

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35, NRSV

In the mystery of God’s will, our Lord Jesus draws near to us in love and compassion, and yet, though his is always the first move, we are invited to draw near to him. His is a love that requires a response of love. He invites, we respond. This is the rhythm of grace that begins and sustains our life with God.

As we read in John 6, Jesus refers to himself as “the bread of life.” In the ancient world, and in many traditional cultures to this day, bread is synonymous with sustenance and nourishment. To miss this fact is to miss the very heart of Jesus’ words. We cannot view bread as the dinner roll that sits neatly alongside a full spread of “real” food, or as a slice of toast to make your morning breakfast last a bit longer. No, bread and water are the heart of human sustenance. The human body can be sustained on just these two items indefinitely. Similarly, Jesus is not a piece of the game we call “life,” but is life itself, and in him our life is found and upheld.

He is the well that never runs dry. His is the loaf that continues to give life to the world. Yet the clarity of his words is unmistakable:  whoever comes to me. The offer stands before every human that has ever lived. “Come and feast, and never be hungry or thirsty again.”

What keeps you from responding in faith to these words of Christ? Perhaps you carry wounds from false shepherds, who spoke the name of Christ but withheld the bread of life, leaving you malnourished and confused. On the other hand, maybe you have struggled to hear the continual nature of this invitation. To come to Christ is not a single, one-time decision isolated from the rest of your life. As a dear friend of mine is fond of saying, our Lord offers us daily bread, not birthday cake!

Do you have a rhythm of daily life with God? Are you able to carve out sacred space in your morning or at bedtime to sit at the Lord’s feet with ears that are quick to listen and a mouth that is slow to speak? This is the secret of an abiding life with Christ, and is a pattern of living that we neither grow out of or move beyond.

Prayer

Father, as Jesus has taught us to pray, we ask that you would give us this day our daily bread, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application
