Chasing Failure

Written by Pat Elsberry

Failure is not the end, but a necessary part of the journey toward becoming who God has called us to be.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 4, 2025

The Lord directs the steps of the godly; he delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. Psalm 37:23-24

Recently, a friend introduced me to Ryan Leak, a motivational speaker whose core message revolves around “chasing failure.” His perspective deeply resonated with me, especially his idea that failure is not something to avoid but to embrace. Leak’s question, “What would you do if you couldn’t fail?” prompted me to pause and reflect on what I might pursue if the fear of failure wasn’t a limiting factor. It’s a powerful thought and one that challenges the boundaries we place on ourselves due to fear of failure.

Leak’s belief that he’s learned more from failure than he has from success struck a chord with me because, in my own life, I’ve seen this play out. Success, while gratifying, often doesn’t provoke the kind of deep reflection or growth that failure does. Failure forces us to confront our weaknesses, evaluate our strategies, and recalibrate our goals. It teaches resilience, patience, and humility, which are often forged in moments of struggle, not triumph.

One of Leak’s most compelling examples was the story of Moses, a man God chose to lead an entire nation. Moses, despite his divine calling, faced failure on multiple occasions. His failures, such as striking the rock in anger and disobeying God, did not define him as a leader but provided opportunities for growth and learning. Moses’s story reminds us that even great leaders are fallible, and God uses our failures as part of His greater plan.

This brings me to Leak’s second powerful question: “What would you do if you knew God was with you?” When we view our lives through the lens of faith, failure takes on a different meaning. It’s no longer something to be feared but rather something to embrace, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. With God by our side, the fear of failure diminishes because we trust He will guide us through our mistakes and even use them for our good.

In light of these reflections, I find myself encouraged to take bolder steps and chase failure, knowing that in every misstep, there is wisdom to gain and faith to strengthen. Failure is not the end but a necessary part of the journey toward becoming who God has called us to be.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (1 Peter 5:10).

Prayer

Father God, thank you for giving me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and move forward in the dreams you’ve placed in my heart. Even if I should fail, I know you will take those lessons learned and turn them into something for your good.

Application

Take a moment to sit down and ask yourself this question: What would you do if you couldn’t fail? Then be bold, step out into your dream and watch what God does.
