“Each of us has a unique and unrepeatable perspective on the world.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 13, 2025
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Romans 12:3, NIV
I recently went on a shopping mission to find the ugliest running socks on the internet. Why, you might ask? Because every single time I need a pair of socks, none are to be found, having instead “mysteriously” disappeared into the furthest reaches of my children’s bedrooms. I was convinced I had succeeded, finding bright neon green socks with orange and black shapes scattered about. Yet, as you may have guessed, within a week I found these new socks turned inside out next to the rest of my son’s dirty clothes. “Why did you wear my socks?” I asked. His reply was simple and straightforward. “Because they’re awesome!”
This silly example drives home a powerful truth: each of us has a unique and unrepeatable perspective on the world, and this is by design! Some of us love one thing, others another. There has never been anyone like you, and there will never be another you at any point in the future. Your experiences and perspective on the world is yours alone, and you are able to offer a gift to the world when you share all the things that make you uniquely you with others.
This diversity of opinion and perspective demands great humility in how we view the world. Though there are things that are not up for debate and should be celebrated by all, such as loving God and neighbor, we must resist the temptation to think our personal opinion is the correct one, simply because it is ours! As a wise mentor once told me, “we are tempted to view others as flawed versions of ourselves.” Instead, let us take St. Paul’s words to heart, not thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought, but instead celebrating our diversity of gifts and the unique ways that each of us can help others see the world in a new way.
Prayer
Father, give us the grace and humility to cherish our differences and celebrate that which makes us unique, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
The next time you’re confronted with differences of opinion, instead of being frustrated by it, choose to celebrate your differences!
