“Perfect love awaits those content in being Christ’s beloved—He has all you need.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 17, 2026
My son, the father said, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. Luke 15:31-32
Everything God has is yours. What does this radical love mean? The generosity of our heavenly Father is shown in exactly what we need: all the love needed to feel loved and valued, all the security to not be fearful or hopeless, all the grace for forgiveness of our foolish choices, and all the mercy and comfort we need to extend mercy and comfort to others. Our giving Father is our faithful provider!
In Jesus’ famous story of the prodigal son, the older brother’s ingratitude is revealed. He couldn’t understand why he wasn’t receiving the same gifts, attention, and celebration that his sinful but repentant younger brother was enjoying. Instead of rejoicing in his brother’s spiritual renewal, he demanded recognition for not doing wrong—which was wrong. Self-serving pride only looks out for itself and becomes jealous of others’ good fortune. In this case, it’s even worse because spiritual pride is sneaky in its self-righteous judgment of others.
At work, a long-term employee feels overlooked and dismissed because of all the attention and praise given to a new hire, even though she has been loyal for many years. A student notices how popular a new classmate is and feels threatened, worried about losing friends to someone who seems more interesting and attractive. A Christian family, not surprisingly, has an obedient child who seldom causes trouble, but her misbehaving sibling receives most of the attention from mom and dad. Jealousy brews beneath the surface of the obedient child, tempting her to seek attention through misbehavior, so she feels noticed by her parents. True love is found in being content as Christ’s beloved. He provides everything you need.
The infinite love of the Father brings contentment to His followers. Everything He has is accessible to His children. Thankfully, the radical generosity of the Lord’s love elevates your love to a higher level. He has all you need, without requiring you to insist. His love surpasses greed and jealousy. And here is the invitation the elder brother almost missed entirely: the feast was never meant to exclude him. It was always meant to include him. His father had already said it clearly: everything I have is yours. The celebration of a lost brother being found was not a subtraction from the elder son’s inheritance but an addition to his joy, if only his pride would step aside long enough to be grateful. Every returning prodigal testifies to the same grace that kept the faithful son all along. To celebrate another’s restoration is to marvel at the Father’s generosity toward all of us. Everything God has is yours. Love Him. Trust Him. Celebrate what He celebrates. Seek His provision for your life’s purpose. All He has is yours!
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).
